I managed to pick up the very stubborn CoolWWWsearch today and can't seem to get rid of it. I've run Spybot, McAfee VirusScan, and CWShredder without much luck. Could someone out there more knowledgable than me please help me out?

Oh, and McAfee periodically tells me that something in my temp files is infected by Exploit-MhtRedir.gen. Cleaning it or emptyting the temp files doesn't help.

Thanks in advance!

  • Download finditnt2000xp.zip.
  • Unzip the contents of finditnt2000xp.zip to a convenient location.
  • Navigate to the Find It NT-2K-XP folder and double-click on find.bat.
  • A command prompt will open and it will search your computer for malicious files.
  • Once it has finished a Notepad window will pop up with output.txt.
  • Copy the entire contents of output.txt into your next post.

When I reboot, I get two error messages. The first one appears twice and reads, "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wiwvrw.exe

Oh, I forgot to add the other strange thing: I can't see the items in my recycle bin. When I try to empty it, I'm told there are 41 items in there, but I can't see any of them, I'm not sure if this is related or something completely different.

We'll fix the recycler in a few minutes, there's still a little bit of this infection to remove.

Use the killbox once more to remove the following files:

C:\Windows\System32\lvr4099qe.dll
C:\Windows\System32\hzhlwh.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\STARTM~1\Programs\Startup\huhkth.exe

Copy and paste the quoted text below into a text editor such as Notepad.
Save this text as FixVX2.reg. Make sure the "Save as type:" is "All Files (*.*)" and save it to your desktop.
Double-click on FixVX2.reg. When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click Yes.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\MediaContentIndex]

Reboot normally and post the new log.

Looks clean, now we have a little cleanup:
  • Download VX2Finder.
  • Double-click on VX2Finder.exe.
  • Click "Restore Policy".
  • In the File menu click "Exit".
  • Double-click on KillBox.exe.
  • In the File menu click "Delete all Dummy files".
  • In the Tools menu click "Delete Temp Files".
  • Choose "Standard File Kill" if not already selected.
  • Paste these files one by one into the top "Full Path of File to Delete" box.
    • C:\RECYCLER\desktop.ini
    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS
  • Click the "Delete File" button which looks like a stop sign.
  • Click "Yes" at the Confirm Delete prompt.
  • It should give you a successful "File was deleted" prompt for each one.
Post a fresh Hijack This log and we'll finish up.

Things seem to be running great. Neither Spybot nor Ad-aware turned up anything. The only little thing is I can't get the volume control icon to appear in the toolbar. When I try to check the box in sounds properties, it tells me the volume control program is not installed. How can I fix this?

Here's some instructions from Microsoft that may fix your problem.

http://support.micro...b;EN-US;Q319095

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN :tazz:

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. ;)
