:tazz: All of a sudden yesterday my Canon MP390 printer stopped working. It said that "There was an error writing to MPUSBPRN01 for the Printer." I tried many times uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for the printer-and although the software seems to be on my computer, it never recognizes the new hardware (printer) Which led me to believe that all of a sudden our two usb ports were not working. We tried plugging a palm into a port to see if it would recognize it, but it did not. WHen I go into the device manager, it says the root usb port is not working properly. TO be specific, it says, "The NTKERN.VXD device loader (s) for this device could not load the device driver (code 2). I have tried removing the root hub and restarting, and the computer seems to reinstall the driver, but the same message keeps showing up. I have run Norton antivirus, Adaware, spybot and other things like windoctor etc to see if I could fix the problem. DOes anyone have any idea why it would all of a sudden do this?? and also any ideas about how to fix it?? Thanks

Not sure if this link will help you, but you're not the only that has had problems with USB support when using Win 98. Win 98 SE was a little better, but finally went to ME. Check and see if this helps with some answers :

I have tried renaming and extracting the usb files from the 98 cd to no avail. I am going to try the autoexec.bat tip, but I'm not sure how the delete the lines from the file using Notepad.

I would leave the autoexec.bat until the last. Usually Device Manager gets you through the driver installs with no problems. Try removing the actual driver from the system directory before trying to reinstall from the CD. Ensure your path is correct to the driver on the CD.
If you are still having problems, try a driver scan at :

DriverShaq

This is not free to actually get a driver, but you can scan for free.

These may help to locate a driver if you want to try to replace the one's you have :

Win Drivers

or this on problems with Win 98SE (Windows 98 Second Edition: Updated Uhcd.sys Fixes Problem with Some USB Devices Not Running) :

It might help to read this, too :

USB Support on Windows 98

A free USB evaluation utility can be downloaded from the Shopping Bag page at USB.org that can be used to determine whether a platform with USB connectors is running a version of Windows that understands USB.

Hope this helps. Keep in touch.
