I had tried to use the 1.99 version of Hijack This, and it crashes without writing a log. It crashes when it gets to 023.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\chg6.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\5l86.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\2v868b.exe


Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.


Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis (the new version should work now) and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working.

Looks to be running ok now. Have ran through all the programs that I could think of that were running during the time the chg6 was active. Still cannot get the 1.99 version of hijack this to work. Still crashes on 023, oh well. Thank you for the help.

I removed the Microsoft Office ink file. I restarted in safe mode and still cannot find the chg6 in the system 32 folder where it states it is.

That chg6.exe file is scaring me. It is mutating.

I am givng you instructions to turn on and off system restore. Turn if off for now. Don't turn it back on until we are clean.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Are you making sure all files are showing? Be sure you're able to view hidden files.

Make sure the recommended folder is unchecked. We want to see all files.

Run Hijack This according to previous instructions and get rid of these:

Thank you for the help. With your help I was finally able to get rid of the chg6.exe. I still cannot get 1.99 of HJT to run, but will keep trying it.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox .
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats.
