Hi

We have just had to uninstall all ZASS files one by one, without using the uninstaller as there seemed to be some coruption and it wouldn't work so wev'e done it file by file.

However when I check Hkey_Current User > Software>Zone Alarm still appears with the following: cfgmain Reg None, ScanDialogState Reg_SZ, ScanSettingsDialogState Reg_SZ , UnprotectedDialogDialogState Reg_SZ UpdateDialogDialogState Reg_SZ.
Can I safely delete these files and how should I do it.( I did try but was unable to do so ) or what should I do. Im totally unfamiliar with this stuff.

Also I have still one folder I couldn't delete. zonelabs, it told me that " Error deleting file or folder Cannot delete dbghelp.dll Access is denied.ake sure the disk is not full or writ protected and that the file is not currently in use.

I want to completely reinstall ZASS, but firstly want to make sure every trace of the old "corrupted" ZASS has gone.

Many thanks

Grandpa

ok you seem fairly compentent so I will walk you through a manual uninstall of za.

first the za ss must be uninstalled through add remove programs starting with the security app first.

once you've removed as much as it will allow you to uninstall then go into the registry: hkey_local_machine\software\ and look for zone alarm o zone labs in the left hand side. highlight and delete.

next go to hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run and look for zone alarm applications listed here.

next reboot into safe mode. open explorer and navigate to c:\windows\system32. look for files that start with vsdatant and vsdata. delete these two files. then navigate to c:\program files\zonelabs and delete the folder. next look for c:\windows\system 32\internet logs. delete the folder (also check c:\windows for the folder as well). Reboot the system.

with any luck this should have cleaned up your system.

Hi starjax

Many thanks for your help. Which I followed to the letter.

I am still unable to delete the zone labs folder under c:\windows\system32. There are 3 files: isafeif.dll, vetredir.dll and dgbhelp.dll when I start the delete I get the pop up as follows;

"Error deleting file or folder Cannot delete dbghelp.dll Access is denied make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use." (Won't let me delete even in safe mode")

Under, Hkey_Current User > Software>Zone Labs > (sub dir) Zone Alarm, the following: cfgmain Reg None, ScanDialogState Reg_SZ, ScanSettingsDialogState Reg_SZ , UnprotectedDialogDialogState Reg_SZ UpdateDialogDialogState Reg_SZ. Wont jolly well delete.

Any more thoughts would be appreciated.

Many many thanks for your help.

Kind regards

Grandpa

OS XP
Adware
Spybot
CA Etrust AV
Ewido , Spyblaster, Spygaurd,

I have found HKLM\System\ControlSet002\enum\Root\LEGACY_VSDATANT (Also in Set001) should I delete these.

Under, Hkey_Current User > Software>Zone Labs > (sub dir) Zone Alarm, the following: cfgmain Reg None, ScanDialogState Reg_SZ, ScanSettingsDialogState Reg_SZ , UnprotectedDialogDialogState Reg_SZ UpdateDialogDialogState Reg_SZ. Wont jolly well delete

if it wont delete then click on properties of the zone labs key and see if you have full permissions. make sure that all subs keys should inherite the permissions.

If you can't delete the folder then you have something running at startup thats calling these files. you can either remove it from startup or boot into safe mode to delete that folder.

don't delete anything anywhere else unless I tell you. for now just focus on the above items.

Hi starjax

Many thnaks for your perseverance.

I have checked permmissions and found that Admin,Owner,Restricted,Security all have a grayed out tick in the boxes below these headings under Full control, Read. I Guess that means full permission is granted.

( Hkey_Current User > Software>Zone Labs > (sub dir) Zone Alarm, plugin > obj > 00000002 &. )

When I click Zone Alarm I get a message

" Error while deleting key" etc

Canonot delete plugin
" Error Deleting Key. Cannot delete plugin. Error while deleting key "

Then the next sub folder down I get

" Error deleting key. Cannot delete obj. Error while deleting key "

Currently I am running Computer Associates ETrust Anti virus. Should I uninstall.

I will try again in safe mode.

I hope all this makes sense.

Many thanks

try taking ownership of that key and see if that helps (its in the same place as the security you were looking at).

Hi starjax

I tried that, didnt seem to make any difference ( assuming I did it right )

Will try uninstalling AV as I think ZASS uses CA Etrust Anti virus, otherwise we may have to get brutal.

Many thanks

zone alarm security suite has nothing at all to do with the anti virus. they are by to different companies.

ok here is a more complete removal process. I'm trying to find the removal tool we used at work, but the vpn connection is being slow tonight.

Here is how to remove ZoneAlarm completely.

1. Open the ZoneAlarm Pro program, go to the OVERVIEW >>
PREFERENCES tab, and make sure the Load At Startup box is UNchecked.

3. REBOOT.

4. You should now have no ZoneAlarm/ZoneAlarm Pro processes running
on your system.

5. Now run Start, Programs, Zone Labs, Uninstall. Be sure to say YES
to delete all files, and you MUST allow TrueVector service to shut
down in order to remove files.

WARNING - Do NOT run the ZoneAlarm Uninstall program while in Safe
Mode. The program may not be able to make the proper registry
changes in Safe Mode, thus generating errors after a reboot.

6. REBOOT.

7. To make sure that you can see the ZoneAlarm/ZoneAlarm Pro system
files, if they are still on your computer:

a. Right-click on Start, then left-click on Explore. When the
Windows Explorer panel appears:
- In Windows 95,98,and NT: Click View>Options (in Windows 98, this
will be called "Folder Options"). Click the "View" tab, then click
the "Show all files" radio button.
- In Windows ME, 2000: Click Tools>Folder Options. Click the "View"
tab, then click the "Show hidden files and folders" radio button.

b. Make sure you also UNcheck the box to "Hide Protected Operating
System Files" if you have one.

c. Click OK.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Making modifications to system files may disable
crucial functions of your Windows operating system. We strongly
suggest re-enabling the "Hide files and folders" feature once all
ZoneAlarm/ZoneAlarm Pro files have been removed. See the following
web page, and verify that the files and folders are removed:

8. Click on Start, then Search or Find, and select Files. Make sure
that the location box is set to search your local hard drive
(usually C or All Local Drives.

Type the following exactly - delete any folders found:

zonelabs
"zone labs"
"Internet logs"

Type the following exactly - delete any files found in \Windows or
any subfolder below it, or in your \Temp folder):

vsdata.dll
vsdata95.vxd
vsdatant.sys
vsmon.*
vsmonapi.dll
vsnetutils.dll
vspubapi.dll
vsutil.dll
zaplus.*
zapro.*
zllictbl.dat
zlparser.dll
zonealarm.exe

Type the following exactly - delete any files found in any folder
with "Programs" in the pathname):

zapro
zonealarm
"zonealarm pro"

Type the following exactly - delete any files found in the registry:

ZAMailSafe
ZoneAlarm
Zone Alarm

Some that could be in the registry:

vsdata.dll
vsdata95.vxd
vsdatant.sys
vsmon.*
vsmonapi.dll
vsnetutils.dll
vspubapi.dll
vsutil.dll
zaplus.*
zapro.*
zllictbl.dat
zlparser.dll
zonealarm.exe

Open the Internet Logs directory (in 95/98/ME this will
be "c:\windows\internet logs", in NT and 2000 it will be
c:\winnt\internet logs, in Windows XP it could be either of these
folders). If you need to keep a copy of old alerts, copy the
ZAlog.txt file to another location first - then delete ALL files in
this folder.

9. Make sure your Recycle Bin is empty (right-click and select
Empty).

10. REBOOT

Hi

Thanks for that.

Every thing is gone EXCEPT the folder zonelabs at C;\windows\system32 when I try to delete I get

" Error deleting file or folder Cannot delete dbghelp.dll Access is denied.make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use. ( Is the anyway I can find if the file is in use.)

Whats something brutal we could try.
Would it have anything to do with Ace Utilities, Ewido, Adaware, Spybot or such like.

Many thanks

Kind regards

:tazz: Recently on the Avast Antivirus forums, one of the "regular" posters
suggested the use of "Unlocker" available from :
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker to someone who was getting "Error
Message(s)" when attempting to delete a file. This program will add
the choice "Unlocker" to the menu when you right-click on an
icon or file and would be selected when clicking on "Delete" does
NOT remove the unwanted icon, file, etc .

PS I have just found the following at this link

http://www.dslreport...779?hilite=enum

24) Run; ' regedt32 ' give 'Security' permission to 'Everyone' and delete:

HKLM\System\ControlSet001\enum\Root\LEGACY_VSMON
HKLM\System\ControlSet001\enum\Root\LEGACY_VSDATANT

25) AND;

HKLM\System\ControlSet002\enum\Root\LEGACY_VSMON
HKLM\System\ControlSet002\enum\Root\LEGACY_VSDATANT

Presume this may still apply. Should I do it.??

Hi starjax

Once again I can't delete.

HKLM\System\ControlSet001\enum\Root\LEGACY_VSMON
HKLM\System\ControlSet001\enum\Root\LEGACY_VSDATANT

25) AND;

HKLM\System\ControlSet002\enum\Root\LEGACY_VSMON
HKLM\System\ControlSet002\enum\Root\LEGACY_VSDATANT

It just won't let me. ( Presume right click . delete )

Perhaps the only way, is to reinstall OS. Hope not.

Many thanks

honestly I would not worry about those entries. they shouldn't cause any issues. Make sure "everyone" has full persmissions on those entries.

try this tool out. I finally got it uploaded last night..
http://starjax.com/tools/ZLuninst.exe

its fairly straight foward. if you have questions please let me know.
