It's supposed to be in Selective - just leave it there, don't change it back to normal startup.

If it's not stopping before the log-in screen you are getting to normal mode regardless of whether it's selective. When you get to the service that causes your computer to stop before the log-in screen that is the one I need to know about.

Go to msconfig, leave it on selective startup - do not change anything on the general tab. Click the services tab. Put a check next to the first service and uncheck the rest. Apply, ok, reboot. If it's not freezing before the log-in screen, then go into msconfig again (do not change anything on the general tab, leave it at selective) put a check next to the first and second service and uncheck the rest. Apply, ok, reboot. Again, if it's not freezing before the log-in screen go back into msconfig check the first, second, third service and leave the rest unchecked apply, ok, reboot. You keep doing this until it's starts freezing at the log-in screen rather than booting up. I need to know the name of the last service checked that caused this. Does that make sense?

sorry

here is what i'm trying to ask/say.

when i click on normal i understand that it makes all the boxes checked...but you tell me to check one box and uncheck the rest (some of the boxes i cant uncheck beacuse windows will not start at all..so i leave the checked of course) but why wouldnt i disable all and just check one at time?

or am i suppose to have all the boxes check but one each time? then restart?

In msconfig does it say that service is running or stopped?

Also, let's make sure it's the only one. In msconfig under the services tab, put a check next to everything except TC/IP NetBios Helper. Will it still boot normally this way?

Ok, thank you. There is another one in there that we need to find.

Leave TC/IP NetBios Helper unchecked.

And start with the service right after it doing the same thing you were and let me know what else makes it not boot.

ok, thank you :tazz:

We're going to try this, no guarantees it will do anything but we're going to try it anyway..

Go into msconfig and choose normal startup (we want all services checked). Apply, Ok, but don't reboot yet.

Then go to Start > Run and type services.msc
click OK.

Scroll down the list and look for each of these:

TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Remote Registry
Windows User Mode Driver Framework
Web Client

Right-click on each one and go to Properties. Under the general tab, click the Start button, then change the "Startup Type" to Automatic. Click Apply, OK.

Reboot your computer and see if that made a difference.

Go head and go into msconfig and uncheck those 4 services and reboot. We'll just leave them unchecked at the moment and finish cleaning up your system then we will deal with them.

Will you post a new HiJackThis log for me?
