Hello!

Thank you to everybody on here for taking the time to provide us all this advice. Huge respect to you folks for doing so.

I'm not sure if I completely removed Winfixer from my system. After reading through the directions on how to do so, I started the removal process. I didn't realize it at the time, but at the point when I needed to type the second filepath name (where the last 5 letters are reversed) I entered them in the same way as I was supposed to for filepath name #1. Here's what I entered for filepath #1:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhhf.dll

Here's what I entered for filepath #2:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhhf.* (I didn't reverse those last 5 letters!)

When Hijackthis opened up, the O2 - BHO MSEvents Object line was no longer there, but I was able to delete the O20 - Winlogon Notify line.

The rest of the process went fine.

I don't seem to have any more Winfixer issues and nothing is showing up in my Hijackthis scans.

What kind of ramifications will this mistake have? Is there anything I should do to try and fix this?

Thanks for taking the time to look at this. I went through and followed all of the directions listed in another Winfixer related post. Here are the steps that were outlined there:

-Download Vundofix, run in Safe Mode, enter the file path names (this is where I made the error with the 2nd file path name by not entering it in reverse)
-Hijackthis automatically opens, fix the requested lines
-Downloaded and ran Cleanup! with only the 4 requested items checked
-Ran ActiveScan (Had the Byteverify virus, all else was clean - I emptied the cache in the Java console to remove Byteverify)
-Reran Hijackthis and removed the last remaining lines associated with Winfixer


Here is my latest HJT log. I really don't see anything left over from Winfixer, but I was concerned about the error I made in trying to remove it:

Your log is CLEAN.

Where you goofed would only have an effect on the second part of the old manual fix. The part that dealt with removing the "backward" files. So here is how to do it manually:

1. We need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

• Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
• choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
• uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
• Close the window with ok.

2. REBOOT into Safe Mode

3. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 Folder.

4. Locate, and DELETE All files named fhhkj. They will have various extensions, such as:

• ini
• ini1
• ini2
• bak1
• bak2
• and so on.

5. REBOOT your system

6. Finally, please let me know me how it went.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I've been away for a few days.

I followed the directions you posted above and found and deleted 3 pesky files that were hanging out in the System 32 folder.

Everything seems to be in order!

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:

• Click Start. Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
• Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
• Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
• Left click on "System Restore Tab"
• Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
• Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
• Click on "Apply"
