Hi. Yesterday, I did all the things in the "You Must Read This First" post up to the Hijack log and it fixed all the problems I was having except one.

When my computer boots up, I get the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the systray even though there is nothing attached to the USB port on the front of the machine. If I click the icon to disconnect the hardware, it shows an "OEI-USB CompactFlash USB Device" connected as drive D. The pop-up also tells me that there is a USB Mass Storage Device at Location 0.

I use the USB port on the back of the CPU exclusively for my printer, a Lexmark Z65. I use the single USB port on the front of the computer for my scanner, my digitial camera and my 64 MB Flash Disk depending on what I need to do. In the past, if I connected the camera to the USB port, the Scanner and Camera Wizard would start and ask me what I wanted to do with the pictures. Now the wizard won't start at all. However, if I use Windows Explorer, the FlashDisk will show up as drive E and I can use it like a hard drive.

How do I get XP to not think there's something attached when there's not and then recognize my camera when I do connect it?

Thanks for your help. Here is my Hijack This log.

First go to Add/Remove Software and see if you can remove
ViewPoint Manager
there. Regardless of whether that works or not continue with what's below.

Not sure if it will solve your problem, but you do have some spyware that needs to be dealt with.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R3 - URLSearchHook: SearchHook Class - {D94AAA2A-C415-42E3-82B6-49FAB4EBFFE9} - C:\PROGRA~1\HALFLE~1\HALFLE~1.DLL

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CC916B4B-BE44-4026-A19D-8C74BBD23361} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msfaol.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows AdStatus] C:\Program Files\Windows AdStatus\WinStat.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msmc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\msedpb.exe

O16 - DPF: {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000020030000} - http://archivietto.a...rg/zozzetta.exe

O16 - DPF: {03F998B2-0E00-11D3-A498-00104B6EB52E} (MetaStreamCtl Class) - https://components.v...vp/content.html

O16 - DPF: {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windup.../bridge-c46.cab
O16 - DPF: {1C78AB3F-A857-482E-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - file://C:\install.cab

O16 - DPF: {AB29A544-D6B4-4E36-A1F8-D3E34FC7B00A} (WTHoster Class) - http://install.wildt...fz4/install.cab
O16 - DPF: {BAB3E70B-A847-4A88-ACFC-778FCCC00287} (CActSetupObj Object) - http://www.odysseusm...om/actsetup.cab

Reboot into safe mode and delete:
C:\Program Files\Windows AdStatus <= entire folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msedpb.exe

Pieter,

I deleted ViewPoint Manager.

Then it didn't show up again in the HijackThis log, but I fixed all the other things you told me to. After I booted in safe mode, I deleted Windows AdStatus, but msedpb.exe was already gone. I deleted it yesterday after I ran one of the other removal programs.

I've still got the "Safely Removal Hardware" icon in my systray after the changes.

Here's my latest HijackThis log. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

Not related but ut still needs fixing:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows AdStatus] C:\Program Files\Windows AdStatus\WinStat.exe

I'll ask one of the hardware gurus to have a look at this thread.
Not something I'm very good at. :tazz:

I thought I might have missed one.

It's done and the pesky icon is still there. ;)

Thanks for all the help. I followed all the directions yesterday in the lead post in this discussion and got rid of a bunch of spyware, adware and malware, plus I solved my "DrWatson Postmortem Debugger Problem."

You guys provide an invaluable service. Thanks again. :tazz:

Eureka!!! ;)

I found the answer to the problem. Not only was the icon hanging around in my systray, but the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard had stopped recognizing my digital camera. So I changed tatics and Dogpiled "Scanner and Camera Wizard" and found this site: http://www.tek-tips.....cfm?qid=737278

It's a long post, but near the bottom, it refers to a Microsoft written program called "Autofix" that solves this type issue. The program can be found here: http://www.jsiinc.co...6900/rh6952.htm

I ran it. It worked. All is good in the world. :tazz: Especially since my Illini are now 20-0 and still #1!

Thanks for your help. Hope this post helps someone else along the way.

Ok. In my excitement, I spoke a little too fast. ;)

The Scanner and Camera Wizard is working again, but I still have the stupid little icon show up in my systray even if there is nothing attached to the USB port when I reboot. :tazz:

I can live with it, but it's still annoying. If anyone knows why XP thinks there is always a Mass Storage Device there, please let me know.

Thanks.

Hello Illinifan, try this.

Go to "Control Panel", "System", click the "Hardware" tab, click the "Device Manager" button. Scroll down the list until you see "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". Click the small + next to it to expand it. Now go through the list and see if you see the one that is showing up in the tray, or just do this to all of them. Right click on each one and click "uninstall". After uninstalling all the USB controllers reboot the system and Windows should detect new Hardware. Let me know if that helps. Remember to unplug everything from the USB ports before uninstalling them. :tazz:

(SMACK!) :tazz: I just figured it out.

Jonny, your instruction to disconnect all the USB cables was what did it for me. I unplugged the cable to my Lexmark Z65 Photo printer and rebooted. When I plugged the printer back in, the stupid icon showed back up and the machine told me that it had found a Compact Flash USB connection.

Of course it did! The printer has a card reader attachment built into it. There are four different card slots I could use. I never use them because my Olympus Stylus 400 uses an XD card and the printer doesn't have that kind of slot. XP is recognizing the card slots.

Now the $64,000 question is, why is it doing this all of a sudden? The answer has to be that it's because I updated the printer driver a couple of weeks ago, just about the time I started noticing the problem.

Now I have to decide if I just want to live with it, reload the old driver or try to find a better driver.
