I cannot burn cds using iTunes 6 but I can burn cds with Sonic. I have a Dell Dimension 8400 running Windows XP Pro. Any suggestions as to a fix as I would prefer to use iTunes for burning.

make sure you are running the latest version of itunes (6.0.1.3). you should then be able to burn "playlist to cd".

I am running the latest version - 6.0.1.3 I can rip CDs but get an error whenever I try to burn discs rather I select the burn icon in the upper right hand or choose burn "playlist to cd." The error message appears generic "the attempt to burn a disc failed. an unknown error occurred (2122)." The discs are blank and I have been successful in burning this name brand discs in this particular drive, just using another application.

apple forums indicates drm may be the issue, google search indicates it could be the burner.

I would update the firmware for the burner and see if that helps. also make sure your burner is set to use DMA (hw configuration) and not PIO mode.

On the phone with Dell Support for over an hour but still no resolution after updating BIOS and firmware as well as ensured that the burner is set to DMA. Not the hardware as I'm able to use the drive with windows drag and drop burner program. Still unable to burn with iTunes!
