Hi,

This forum was very helpful in solving a problem for me a while ago. I've tried to keep up with the steps listed. Recently I began having a problem where my computer does not shut down properly. After I select shut down, it begins to, but instead of actually shutting down it gets a green bar across the top of the screen after about 20 seconds and freezes. My internet is also running very slow. I ran CleanUp, Spybot, Adaware and CWshredder. I also ran Panda Scan and it found these:

Incident Status Location

Possible Virus. Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\td01.dll
Spyware:Spyware/New.net Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall4_80.exe
Spyware:Spyware/New.net Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall4_88.exe
Here is my hijack this log:

Weatherbug came bundled with NewDotNet by the looks of it.

Most of it seems to have been removed but we'll make sure by using the uninstaller.

Step 1

Configure Windows to Show all hidden files & folders and ensure you're familiar with rebooting into Safe Mode.

Download and install System Security Suite.

Download LSP-Fix.zip and WinsockFix to your desktop. These are precautionary in case your internet connection is lost during NetDotNet removal.

Download the NewDotNet Uninstaller and save NNuninstall.exe to a 3-½ floppy disk.
  • Insert the floppy disk into the floppy drive of the computer that needs to have our software uninstalled from.
  • Click on Start > Run
  • In the Open window type, A:\NNuninstall.exe
  • Click on the OK button.
  • After removal of the software, you may be prompted to reboot. Please do so.
  • As the machines starts up again, start tapping the F8 key to get to the Advanced Options menu and select Safe Mode.

Step 2

Once in Safe Mode, use Windows Explorer to locate and delete the following files & folder in bold (if they still exist):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\td01.dll
C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall4_80.exe
C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall4_88.exe
C:\Program Files\NewDotNet\ <--folder

Step 3

Close ALL other windows and open System Security Suite.
  • On the Items to Clear tab select Cookies & Temporary Files under Internet Explorer.
  • Select Temporary Files & Recycle Bin under My Computer.
  • Press the Clear Selected Items button.
  • Restart the machine when prompted.
Step 4

Then post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know if the problems that you originally cited have been rectified.

If you have trouble reconnecting to the net after uninstalling NewDotNet, run LSPFix. Check the 'I know what I'm doing' button, hit 'Finish' and reboot the machine. Do NOT run LSP-Fix though unless your connection is broken. If you still have problems, run WinsockFix. :tazz:

As long as you consider my log clean now, I think the problem has been fixed. Thanks for your help once again! I really appreciate it.

Other than Weatherbug (which displays ads in the program itself from what I understand), you're clean.

Let me know if the problems return. :)

Now that you're clean again, please follow these simple steps to keep yourself safe and secure in the future.

Re-enable Your Protection

If asked to reveal your hidden system files and folders during the course of the fix, please rehide those now by reversing the steps here.

Please also re-enable the real-time protection for any anti-spyware programs I asked you to disable before proceeding with the fix.

Disable and Re-enable System Restore to Flush Infected Restore Points

If you are using Windows ME or XP, you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in your restore points.

You can find instructions on how to disable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide

or

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

Re-enable System Restore with instructions from the tutorial above and create a new Restore point.

Block Access to Untrustworthy Sites

You can prevent your computer from visiting a myriad of untrustworthy sites and ad-servers by installing a customised hosts file. One of the best available is the MVPS Hosts File. Simply follow the instructions to install the file in the correct location. This will not only make surfing safer but will improve website load times and block popups from many of the large ad-servers.

Clean out ALL Temp Files

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1: Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start > Run, and type %temp% and press ok.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files in this directory. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete the rest. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the 'Delete Files' button and put a checkmark in 'Delete Offline Content'. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while!

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:
