After running Ewido, Spy Sweeper, Spybot, and AdAware (which helped remove a lot of spyware) I still have something they did not catch. I still get popups and elevated cpu usage. Every few seconds sms_msn.exe opens regsvr32.exe, resulting in high cpu usage and typing interruptions. Any suggestions? Here is my Hijack logfile:

jaydeetee,

Sorry we have been a while in getting to you.

Download Crap Cleaner from here or here.
Install and run it. The windows tab should be opened in the upper left of the program. Click analyze and then click run cleaner.

Scan with HijackThis again and place a check next to these items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {392BAF48-A26A-45B5-9263-97128E429268} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [0cw80lwc.dll] RUNDLL32.EXE 0cw80lwc.dll,b 104181284
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sms_msn] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sms_msn.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [fomm] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\fomm\fommm.exe
O23 - Service: Command Service (cmdService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SmFtZXMgVG9kZA\command.exe (file missing)

Close all other windows except HijackThis, and hit Fix Checked

Run a search on your computer for this file and delete it:
0cw80lwc.dll ----->LET ME KNOW IF YOU CANNOT FIND IT

1) Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop and run it.

2) Select "Delete on Reboot".

3) Now click on the top tab labeled Options.
Scroll down to Delete on Reboot > then select Process All in List.

4) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sms_msn.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\fomm\fommm.exe

5) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

6) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" to reboot next.

After the reboot please delete these folders:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\fomm
C:\WINDOWS\SmFtZXMgVG9kZA

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Also post a new HJT log.

Thanks,

LTP

LTP, Thanks so much for your help. You guys are the greatest! I could not get Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner to open (it wouldn't go past the instructions page). However, my problem seems to be solved. I am getting no lagging or popups and my cpu usage has returned to normal. Here is the latest HJT logfile:

Looks like we got it huh :tazz: Nice work...

Just for good measure let's run one last online scan.

Please run the Panda scan here:
http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your some of your personal information
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the Panda log with a new HJT log.

Thanks,

Lovethepirk

jaydeetee,

Delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS\drsmartload.dat

Other than that you look clean :tazz:

Then look over this for some extra protection :)

Please look carefully at this post for some excellent preventative measures to take so you do not get infected again.
Prevention is good :)

To reduce the re-infection potential for malware and protect yourself against spyware, here are a few helpful suggestions:
1. Keep Windows and Internet Explorer current with the latest critical security updates from Microsoft. This will patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You CANNOT complete this update using an alternate browser.
http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us
http://www.microsoft.../ie/default.asp

2. Run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep its definitions up-to-date. If you are thinking about switching, there are a some good free Antivirus programs that are decent, including AVG and Avast!.
AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Avast: http://www.avast.com...ast_4_home.html

3. In addtion to using Ad-aware consider using another free malware scanning/removal program:
Adaware SE: http://www.download....ubj=dl&tag=top5
Spybot S&D: http://www.download....tml?tag=lst-0-1
MS Antispyware beta: http://www.microsoft...re/default.mspx

4. Consider using a free firewall if you are not already using one. Some good free ones are:
Sygate: http://smb.sygate.co...pf_standard.htm
Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs....n.jsp?lid=ho_za

5. Consider using an alternate free browser for general web surfing but you must use IE for windows update.
Mozilla Firefox: http://www.mozilla.o...oducts/firefox/

6. Consider increasing your browser security by using these programs:
SpywareGuard will protect your homepage from being hijacked: http://www.javacools...ywareguard.html
SpywareBlaster will increase browser protection by blocking hundreds of known malware sites by adding them to IE's restricted sites zone. Download it here: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html

If you use SpywareBlaster, you can also use a customblocklist to add even more entries into IE restricted sites zone. Go to this site for the current list and how to use instructions: http://customblockinglist.cjb.net/

IE-SPYAD is similar in that it adds thousands more known malware sites to IE's restricted zone. Download it here:
https://netfiles.uiu...ww/resource.htm

*Remember just like your primary anti-virus software, it is important to keep all of these programs up-to-date and use them on a regular basis.

Good luck!!!
