Since having a virus earlier this year I have been very careful and diligent in running all the recommended anti-virus/spyware/trojans that I can.

Ewido, Ad-Aware, Spybot and Kasperspy all give me a clean bill of health and are run at least weekly to clear up the unavoidable cookies. In addition I use Spywareblaster, Microsoft Anti-Spyware and Norton AV to help prevent infection.

I am sure that I don't have any serious infection but one thing is puzzling me :tazz: and I can't find a fix anywhere..... :)

On my PC I have 1 admin account and 3 other users. In the admin account (mine) I am not having any problems at all but on start up in any of the other accounts (or indeed just switching between users - first time only) Microsoft Anti-Spyware jumps in (twice!) and tells me that CoolWebSearch is asking to be installed, to which I of course refuse.

This happens prior to launch of any browser (default Firefox, with IE6 in background) so I suspect that there is something lurking in the background which triggers it but what....?

HJT log attached if required but it might be a simple fix that is already known about and can be sorted quickly.

CWShredder is also clear :)

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Reboot your PC.

also please run cwshredder on all the accounts. ach account stores it information seperately, You may also want to post a hijack this log for each of the accounts that this happens on.

Let us know how your system is working afterwards.

Many many thanks...

I knew it had to be something simple!

Deleted the R3 entry (other entry deleted after last post) and lo and behold the problems drops off completely!

CWScanner clear on all accounts too.

All accounts appear clean now and no everyday danger of one of the kids accepting the CWS thingy upon login....

Just got to tighten down their access now :tazz:

Glad we could help :)

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :tazz:
