Hi, on Friday night I was running a virusscan and adaware scans, disk cleanup (adaware, spybot, windows thing, etc) as I always do. Only difference was that i uninstalled my ATI drivers in preparation for installing the 5.11 drivers.

Well, I wake up this morning and my PC is on a blank screen saying "Hardware initiate failed, press G to continue"...

So I restart. All my computer does is hang at the Windows loading screen for like 5 minutes until it restarts by itself.

Then when it restarts I get the choice of running Windows normally, safe mode, or last known config. Last known good config does the same as running Windows normally - it hangs on the loading screen.

I've tried safe mode but it hangs when the list of drivers appears on my screen.

What do you think is wrong? I'd like to fix this without having to reinstall windows, etc. Do you think it has something to do with the fact that I uninstalled the ATI drivers?

I've updated drivers before AND did my virusscan/adaware scans before with this problem never occuring like this.

Please help, this is urgent as there are alot of important unfinished documents on there.

Howdy and welcome to G2G:

Try using the Safe Mode option.. You should see a DOS screen as it loads.. If it stops the boot process, write down the file it stops and and post that here (Hope it isn't mups or you are in trouble!!)..

\windows\system32\DRIVERS\gagp30kx.sys

That is the VIA driver for XP SP2 that you un-installed.. It is trying to load it now and can't as you removed it..

If you have your XP cd handy, I would suggest running a "Repair" and getting it back..

Wow, that is odd. I never deletedd such a file.

Is there any other way to get the file back (like load it from a floppy?)

Last time I did a repair install, not every program was left standing in the program files list (START > Program Files)

Go a google or dogpile search for it.. Is your XP cd a XP SP2 install cd ??

The XP CD is combined with SP2......

I was able to find the file on google.

Now, how do i put it into the drivers folder?

I know I'd use the recovery console....but the commands for the operations I am not aware of.

Just use Windows Explorer and navigate to "\windows\system32\DRIVERS\" ..

Copy it to there..

I can't get to Windows Explorer.....

The furthest I get is the WINXP loading screen (the blue moving bar)

Methinks you are going to have to do the "Repair" option again..

Well my concerns about a repair install are-

A) Last time I did it not all programs show up correctly in the program files list, accessable from the start menu

B) I do not have the CD with my at this time

Isn't there a way to take a file off of a floppy and copy it into thy windows\system32\drivers through the recovery console?

If that would work I would prefer to do it that way.

Yep.. you can use the "copy" command BUT, you need the XP cd to get into the Recovery Console.. so, based on your last post saying you didn't have it, I suggest you get it as you need to boot using it!!!

Well, here is the issue-

I do have a CD, but it is XP Home..........

I do not have the PRO cd at this time.

The XP Home cd does have recovery console.....so its only purpose would be for that.

Now all I have to do is find this file. Thanks for the list of the commands! Wish me luck.

Don't count on the XP Home cd to work.. why don't you have the XP Pro cd or are you running a pirated version??
