I did the unthinkable and accidentally clicked on a bad AIM link and now am having random pop-ups with the address ad.yieldmanager.com appearing at random times and random intervals. They aren't terribly intrusive and aren't horribly frequent, but I'd still like to get rid of anything that might be causing them if possible. Here are the scan reports from Ewido and HijackThis.

Hello John and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Do you know this name and address: Norlight Telecommunications 13935 Bishops Drive Brookfield WI 53005-6605 US Is it your ISP or PC supplier?

You appear to have two antivirus programmes running; Norton and AVG. This is not good practice as it will cause conflicts and slowness. Pleas uninstall one of them.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then Program Files.
In the menu bar, go to File>New>Folder. That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can right-click on and rename to HJT or HijackThis. Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Cut ‘n’ Paste your HijackThis.exe into it.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Spybot S&D

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

Secure HTTP (Service Secured)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

Service Secured

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Please visit Kaspersky for an online file scan. Browse to and submit this file for appraisal:
C:\WINNT\system32\pgws.exe. Please wait for a reply from the website and let me know the response in your reply.

Please install Spybot search & destroy, open it, update it, immunize it, and perform a scan. When it has completed, ensure that you check everything it finds coloured Red only before clicking Fix Selected Problems. If Spybot requests starting again at reboot to clear memory resident malware, please ensure you click YES, giving it permission to do so.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O23 - Service: Secure HTTP (Service Secured) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\csrvs.exe (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
  • In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\WINNT\system32\igps.exe
C:\Program Files\QL\qlink32.dll

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Go to Options > Delete on Reboot > Process ALL in list
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look. (Inc. reply from Kaspersky and answer about ISP).

Thanks very much for your reply!

To answer your question about Norlight Telecommunications, I'm familiar with the company, but they are not directly this computer's ISP. We get our service through Charter (a cable company) which may get some amount of service through Norlight, but I'm not entirely sure about that. This is actually my parents' computer, I'm just the son, back for a bit from college, who partially screwed things up and wanted to fix the things that I had nothing to do with as well. :tazz:

You had mentioned having two anti-virus programs installed being an issue. I've removed Norton (for which the subscription had already run out, so I don't even know if it was operating), but should I also remove AVG while I have the trial of Ewido? I was using Ewido at the recommendation of this site, and likely will remove it at the end of the trial period.

As for the Kaspersky file scan result, that file was not on the computer. Since getting that first HijackThis log, I have run SpySweeper as well as Ewido, so perhaps the file was removed by one of those. The same can be said for a number of the processes from the previous HijackThis log. I have, however, followed your instructions and done everything as suggested, so here is the new log.

Hello again

Just to answer your questions first. Norton antivirus is no longer running; good. AVG is antivirus Ewido is antispyware the two run OK together. SpySweeper is excellent especially the latest definitions, however it should not be run along with Ewido since they are both antispyware programmes. Can I suggest you have SpySweeper with AVG for running in real time and use Ewido for the trial period and beyond for on demand scanning (you can still update it after the trial period).

Other than that, I have to say ..........................

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

I wish your parents happy safe surfing!

Thanks again for your help!

Everything seems to be running well, except I'm still getting the occasional pop-up from ad.yieldmanager.com, mainly while not browsing. It seems as though Ad-aware and Ewido find nothing but the remains of these pop-ups (ie, cookies from that address), but aren't finding the source. Needless to say, I'm confused. If you have any other ideas as to what could be causing this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

We can try something else. Please disable both Ewido Guard and SpySweeper whilst running the fix.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:AproposFix
Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

Hello again John

I see just two bad files in the log.

Download
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
  • In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\0cw803ec.dll
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\0cw80pu6.dll

Any better?[s]
