I have been getting a lot of Winfixer popups, along with others. Also, my screen will sort of freeze up and not allow me to click on anything, scroll down, etc. for a few seconds/minutes. (I use WindowsXP by the way)

I have been using NoAdware for quite a long time now, I guess it was not doing the trick for me.

So I came here, I read the topic about what to do before you post your HiJackThis log, and did these things:

*Ran CleanUp
*Ran CWShredder
*Ran Spybot S&D
*Ran Panda Activescan

So far the problem(s) aren't fixed at all after doing these things. Spybot finds several things, and says it has gotten rid of them, but it hasn't been able to.

I hope I can be helped. All of the directions I've seen given to others with similar problems seem so complicated, and I am worried I will not be able to follow them well. So if I ask a lot of questions, I apologize in advance! Thank You in advance, too.

Also, I do not have a printer. So hopefully there will be a way to do this without one.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, and since you do not have a printer, can I suggest that you copy the fix and paste it into Word or Notepad and save it to your desktop for easy reference. I think I can fix your PC but I am not sure I can do much about your taste in music……………. Hanson????

You have the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.
  It should look like this

  By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
  Press enter to continue....
  
  

• At this point press enter once.
  
• Next you will see:
  

  Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log from normal mode and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Like I said before I'm not the smartest when it comes to computers, so I'm not sure about your question about mulitiple identity pc's. This is my laptop, and I'm the only one who uses it, but there are 2 different user accounts.... is that what you mean?

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
• In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
• Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsq.dll

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
• Go to Options > Delete on Reboot > Process ALL in list
  
• Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log, from normal mode, and I will take another look.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

Oh Thank you soooo much!! I am so relieved and happy that I actually got this all fixed!!!!! I wasn't sure I'd be able to do it, and thanks to you I was able to. I am really greatful!

I followed those last instructions, by the way.

Also, I was wondering about the antispyware programs.. about how often should I run those? Also, if it's not recommended to use more than one, what should I do? Should I only use one or ?? lol Oh and another question, do you know anything about NoAdware because that was the one I was previously using before I came here. Should I not use that and just stick to using Spybot S&D or one of the others you mentioned?

Sorry if you can't answer those last questions!!

What do I use?

I really cannot recommend different software without knowing all the pros and cons for each, so I thought I would tell you what I use instead.

Antivirus – AVG Free edition with daily update and scan.
Antispyware – Microsoft Antispyware (Free) with daily update and scan.

In addition, I use Ewido (Free) probably twice per week, Ad-Aware (Free) once per week and Spybot (Free) once per week. I use Sygate personal firewall (Free) on the home network.
