I have tried many (all?) of the various fixes recommended on this topic (HJT, SPYBOT, Spyware Doc, WINSOCKXPFIX, LSPFIX, etc. et.) plus removed all other users from the PC and still can't get completely rid of the 404ADS redirect. Below is my HJT Log. Thanks for your help - this looks like a great forum for learning how to avoid and repair.

Thanks Ilago. I'm not as impatient as some of the posters, so don't worry about the time. I'm just glad to get your help.

Hi Tokyjoe

Thank you for your patience. Please disable System Restore - Right Click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and go to Properties. Go to the System Restore Tab and put a tick in the "Turn off System Restore on all drives". You can re-enable it as soon as your system is clear of spyware.

It looks as though some of the problems have already been removed.

You may need to print this out or copy and paste into a Notepad file so you can keep track of the deletions when you are working in Safe Mode and not connected to the internet.

Open HijackThis and click on "Do System Scan Only". When the scan is complete check all the following items. Then disconnect from the internet and close all open windows including this browser window and all instant messaging - Yahoo messenger, MSN messenger, ICQ and anything else that is not essential and click on Fix checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [switp] C:\WINDOWS\Switp_bund_ar3.exe
O23 - Service: ISEXEng - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\System32\angelex.exe (file missing)

Reboot into Safe Mode by continually tapping the F8 key as soon as the computer starts to boot up - after the beep. When the Windows XP Safe Mode menu comes up - Choose Safe Mode. You don't need any networking.

Open Windows Explorer and go to > Tools> Folder Options> View, select:*Show hidden files and folders
*Display the contents of system folders
Uncheck:*Hide protected operating system files
Delete these files

C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
C:\WINDOWS\ Switp_bund_ar3.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\angelex.exe (file missing) - check that the file is missing - if it is there - delete it.

While you are in Safe Mode, use Windows Explorer to clean out the contents of the \temp and \temporary internet folders

C:\documents and settings\your user name\Local Settings\temp then \temporary internet files

Delete all the files in the folders and sub-folders. Don't delete the sub-folders. Don't delete desktop.ini or index.dat when you come across them. Warning - You might lose some saved passwords when you delete cookies.

If you have any other users set up - do the same thing with their temp folders.

Check c:\Windows\Temp and delete the files that are there. Sometimes there are a couple that Windows prevents you deleting.

Check c:\windows\Prefetch and delete the contents of that

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot into normal mode and do a new HijackThis log so we can check. Can you please let me know how your computer is performing. I'd be interested to know if it's still running slowly.

Thanks Ilago.
I went through all of the instructions and everything seemed to come up clean.

The only residual problem is that when I log on to another user account, dial-up my IP and launch IE I just get a DNS error (Page cannot be displayed or Could not open search page. This does not occur if I first dial-up from the main user account on the PC.

The first log posted below is for the other user account. The second log is for the main account.

Thanks, Joe

Hi Tokyojoe

There doesn't seem to be anything obvious that would cause the dial up problem. Might be worth checking that the dial up connection box has the button for all users checked.

You've installed some additional realtime monitoring antispyware software - like The Cleaner and Spyware Doctor. You might need to check the settings on these programs to see if they are obstructing it. Particularly as it worked before.

Disable all the antispyware software and see if it works. Then re-enable each one seperately to check if one of them is the problem.

Please ask if none of that works.

Hi Ilago,

I tried your suggestions, but no difference.

It's kinda weird. If I log onto the main user account first and then switch to sub-user account I can dial-up and access web pages from the user account (even if I haven't dialled-up from the main user account beforehand).

However, if I log into a sub-user account first I can use the dial-up connection, but cannot access any web pages. If I then switch to the main user account I cannot access ant web pages from there either - even if I disconnect and re-connect. I have to re-start the computer to get past this problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Joe
