I found this same problem in a post by another user and followed the instructions to remove.

I'd just like to know if my computer is now clean.

I followed all the preliminary instructions:

1. Ran clean-up!

2. Ran ad-aware. Found nothing.

3. Ran spybot. Found 2 problems, log below. Problems fixed.

4. Ran CWShredder. Found and removed CWS.FindOnline.

5. Ran MicroTrend House Call. Found nothing.

6. I already have Microsoft SP2.

I'm posting the new log below... but I should say this before:

I think there IS a problem. I tried rebooting just now because the system was very slow... and it wouldn't boot. I got the Windows XP page, which took an awful long time to load, and then, the screen stayed black for almost two minutes... after which it rebooted by itself and brought me to the page where you have a choice of modes to boot in. The only way I could get windows to load was by selecting "open last functional configuration", or something like that...

Please go to Start -> Run -> cmd and press Enter. At the command prompt type sfc /scannow, making sure to put a space between the "c" and the slash, and then press Enter. This will run the System File Checker. Follow the prompts, and insert your Windows installation CD if requested. Then please restart your computer.

I bought the computer from my ex-employer. He didn't give me any disk. I asked him about it a short time ago when I had another problem and he says he doesn't have anything.

Ok, well at one point you had smitfraud, so let's run the fix for that. You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Security Suite:

• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
• When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
• From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
• After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
• Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:

Again, do NOT run a scan yet.


Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

Now open Ewido Security Suite

• Click on Scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives. You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one. If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop
• Close Ewido

Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.


Restart your computer in normal mode.

Run the Panda online virus scan at http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Finally, restart your computer once more, and please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the Ewido scan and the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Well, we're not off to a good start... smitrem doesn't seem to work...

I downloaded and tried to run it. It gave me the first couple of screens of instructions, but when prompted to press any key to continue to execute, nothing happens...

Ok, let's try disabling some of the antispyware programs on your system. Disable SpywareGuard:

• Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
• Then go to Menu, File, Exit.
• Then confirm the program is closed.

Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable SpySweeper:

• Open it click >Options over to the left then >Program Options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
• Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
• Uncheck "home page shield".
• Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

Please also disable Ewido.

Once those steps are done, try running my previous instructions.
