I think I am going to go berserk! I have a continous alert on my taskbar that takes me to a SpyAxe website and automatically downloads the program every time I click it to close it! I have repeated popup ads, even when my web browser is not open. I have tried to end task in the task manager and delete the file in windows explorer, but it constantly says that it's in use... even after "end task."

I have followed every step noted on your site, including downloading, installing, and running CleanUp!, AdAware, CWShredder, SpyBot S&D, and Ewido. I've also installed Windows updates.

Inasmuch as you have already downloaded both Ewido and Ad-Aware, threre is evidently no need to download these programs again. Please update their definitions, configure and run them according to the instructions provided in the fix.

A. 1. Download the following self-extracting file smitRem.exe and save the file to your DESKTOP.

• Double click the Smitrem.exe icon on your Desktop.
• Then click Run>Start and a Smitrem folder will apear on your desktop also.

2. Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.


3. Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite

• Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
• Install the program
• Update the definitions to the newest files.
• DO NOT RUN IT YET

4. Install Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions.

• Ad-Aware SE Setup
• Update the definitions
• DO NOT RUN IT YET

5. REBOOT your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

6. Now open HJT, click SCAN and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

8. Using Windows Explorer, please locate and DELETE the following files/folders (with all their content), if they are still present:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp2E95.tmp
C:\Program Files\Security Toolbar<==Folder
C:\Program Files\SpyAxe<==Folder


9. Open the smitRem folder

• Double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
• Follow the prompts on screen.
• Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

• NOTE:The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
• Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

10. Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Let ir remove all it finds.


11. Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop
• Close Ewido

12. Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.


13. REBOOT back into Normal Mode


14. Click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut

• Do a full system scan.
• Make sure the autoclean box is checked!

15. Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

B. Please download SpyAxeFix.exe © noahdfear and save it to your desktop.

• Close all other programs and windows.
• Double click SpyAxeFix.exe
• Then click Start to extract the tool to it's own folder.
• Open the SpyAxeFix folder
• Double click the SpyAxeFix.bat to start the tool.
• At one point when the tool runs, your taskbar will dissappear (this is normal)
• Your computer will restart when the tool completes.
• A text file named spyaxe.txt will be created in the SpyAxeFix folder.
• Please post the contents of that log.

C. In summary, I need you to post the following logs/reports:

• HijackThis
• Log from Panda Scan
• Smitfiles.txt
• Ewido log

Ok... downloaded, installed, and ran all the programs you suggested. Things seems to be cleared up now. Please note that when I ran Panda ActiveScan I was not given an option to check an autoclean box. My only problem at this point is that webpages are taking a very long time to open. Please download and rerun Smitrem again. This is an updated version as of today and should take care of the remainder of the infection. Do not use yesterday's download, follow these instructions:

• Download the following self-extracting file smitRem.exe and save the file to your DESKTOP.
  • Double click the Smitrem.exe icon on your Desktop.
  • Then click Run>Start and a Smitrem folder will apear on your desktop also.
• REBOOT your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
• Open the smitRem folder
  • Double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
  • Follow the prompts on screen.
  • Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
  • It will produce a log called smitfiles.txt log
• REBOOT your system into Normal Mode
  
  
• Post the contents of the smitfiles.txt log into this thread.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:

• Click Start. Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
• Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
• Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Right click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
• Left click on "System Restore Tab"
• Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
• Left click on "Apply"

REBOOT your system

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Right click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
• Left click on "System Restore Tab".
• Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
• Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
