Samsung 80GB ide HDD on XP sp2

First the PC gave a blue screen and then after reboot the critical message :
Insert disk and press enter

For now, I put it as slave(expecting that in some boot it is recognized, but so far no luck) and format a new one to the OS, but there was so many information, not backupd on the poor old one.

Any ideas how to recover data from a disk that is not recognized

General rule of thumb: If the POST screen (where the memory is counted and drives found etc) can't see it, not a lot of other stuff will either.

You can find various tools and what not online that will all claim to be able to get anything off the drive BUT the success of these depends on what state the deceased drive is in and whether its a mechnical problem (in which case you've most likely lost it all together) or a software problem.
