WinXP, Explorer.exe error 0x0000022

Yeah, I downloaded (and scanned) something I should not have and now I cannot get explorer.exe to run on boot up. I also get the error when trying to start it from the Task Manager. Error is...

The application failed to intialize properly (0x0000022). Click on OK to terminate the application.

I believe orginally it was a number 5 in there. I have tried Ewido and Ad-aware with no luck, going to try AVG free version again but I have my doubts. Below I will post a log from Hijackthis, naturally I didn't pick anything to fix since I am not sure the problem. Would love to avoid doing a full re-install of WinXP (my copy lacks SP but I do have SP2 installed) right now, any help would be appreciated. Please let me know if you need to know anything else, I will gladly post more info when I get home from work on Friday.

Let me help,and explain why this message may have came up.

This error message means that the user concerned doesn't have read access to some system file required by the application. This sometimes occurs with Visual Basic applications where the appropriate permissions aren't set to allow read access to the Visual Basic runtime DLL. But it can occur if read access is not permitted for any DLL, OCX or other component used by the application. It usually only occurs if the software components have been manually copied to the application folder or Windows System folder instead of being installed using the Setup program provided by the application developer.

So open your comand prompt (>Start >Run "cmd") and then type in these commands:

CACLS %systemroot%\System32\*.dll /E /G BUILTIN\Users:R
CACLS %systemroot%\System32\*.ocx /E /G BUILTIN\Users:R

Well, current problem is when I try to run those commands I get an error because WININET.DLL is missing. I believe AVG has quaratined that file because of an infection. I also got the same error on boot up in regular mode. The command seem to run any ways but didn't fix the issue. Should I restore that file and then clean another way?

I will try to post a bit more when I get home from work and have more time to work on this, sorry for shortness.

Hi, Dont restore it (probably give you even more problems)

download another "wininet.dll" click on "wininet.dll"

Try and goto AVG and look if you can see were the file came from and save the downloaded file to that directory. If AVG doesnt tell you were the file came from. Save the downloaded file to "C:\Windows\System32\"

Please go to the malware forum in my signature and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE .

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.


spike hacker....please do not offer help with spyware/malware removal unless you are a staff member or a trusted helper....and deffinitly do not help with spyware/malware removal in any forum other than the malware forum.....we can try to fix the aftermath of infections outside of the malware forum....but we cannot help with the removal of spyware/malware....
