I have been infected by the following Trojan.startup.NameShifter.HN and TrojanDownloader.ConHook, after downloading and using many different any virus and spywear programs including MS antispywear beta and NOD32 virus scan they still have had no effective reponse in eliminating the threat, although they do find and quarenten the threat. here is my hijack this

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have the ConHook infection, which is the downloader for Vundo. I’ll have a go at fixing ConHook, which may become Vundo, so I’ll include a vundo scan too just in case. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep and I’ll tidy up afterwards.

You appear to have two antivirus (AV) programmes running in real-time, Norton and NOD32. Please note that this will lead to conflicts and slowdown. Please uninstall one of them.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then Program Files.
In the menu bar, go to File>New>Folder. That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can right-click on and rename to HJT or HijackThis. Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Cut ‘n’ Paste your HijackThis.exe into it.

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

To start please download the following programme:
VirtumundoBeGone

Open VirtumundoBeGone by secured2k, and follow the on-screen instructions to sweep your PC for infections. When it has finished it will save a log to the desktop. Please post it in your reply.

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from Process Explorer

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from KillBox

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on every instance of C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklk.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklk.dll 's under winlogon click OK.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on every instance of C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklk.dll then click the kill button.

Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check mark or tick beside each of the following:.

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

Next run KillBox and paste this line below into the box, select delete on reboot then press the red X Button, say YES to the 1st prompt but NO to reboot now

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklk.dll

Then on KillBox top bar, press tools/delete temp files and follow those prompts and say yes to everything, then let it reboot.

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log plus the log from VBG

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

Next run KillBox and paste this line below into the box, select delete on reboot then press the red X Button, say YES to the 1st prompt but NO to reboot now

Then on KillBox top bar, press tools/delete temp files and follow those prompts and say yes to everything, then let it reboot.

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log plus the log from VBG

i have downloaded all that you have said and i was under the impression that i had uninstalled symantec norton, so i tryed to elliminate it all from my computer. I had a problem once i got to the winlogon.exe in safemode. when looking for the C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklk.dll i could nto find that exact line so i ahve a screenshot for you to look at as well as a VBG and highjack this

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

Whichever firewall you choose, check out its efficiency at http://www.grc.com follow the links for Shields Up and scan all service ports.
