broswer hijacked, isearch

I ran ad-aware, spyboy search and destroy, norton 2005, tried CWS shredder, but keep getting a virtual memory alarm and won't run it. Computer is slow, and seems like it's always doing something (light's almost always going). There was an isearch toolbar at the bottom right, which we finally got rid of, but IE still won't load, and when from messenger or something, it's all pop-ups. It's windows XP. It highjacked the browser to another site, and added its own toolbar. We're at a loss what more to do!

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\
C:\Program Files\uv7z2wcd


Download Ad-aware from: http://www.geekstogo...n=download&id=5

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file
  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives
  • Scan Active Processes
  • Scan Registry
  • Deep Scan Registry
  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
  • Scan my Hosts file
  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.


-> Reboot your computer.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic. :tazz:

Hi Coachwife6,
Thanks so much for writing! I think I did everything you suggested in the order you wrote it. The only difference was that ad-aware didn't have an in depth scan, but maybe it's a different version. I went into safe mode, and lo and behold, there were those hidden files. Couldn't find those buggers at all. Thanks for recommending looking at unhiding them. So I deleted those folders both in safe mode, ran ad aware, then deleted temp files. Rebooted, and just ran hijack this, and this is my log file. I'm unsure if it deleted anything, it looks like the ones you told me to check, and then hit fix checked are still there. Could I have a bad hackthis version? Or am I wrong, and the files are gone? Thanks again!

Just wanted to add great news, that IE finally loaded. I thought everything was back to normal, but then the pop-ups are starting again even though no IE window was open. This is amazing! My fiance says all he did was look at a lyrics site!
Anyway, thanks again so much for your suggestions!!!!!!

Go to start>>run>>and type in msconfig

Go to the last tab and uncheck qtbcn.

It will say you need to reboot. Go ahead and do it.

Run Hijack This again according to the same instructions given previously and,
put a check mark next to these.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0

O2 - BHO: IE Update Class - {5B4AB8E2-6DC5-477A-B637-BF3C1A2E5993} - C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\sysupd.dll (file missing)

Reboot into safe mode and find these and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\qtbcn.exe

Clean out your temp. files, run adaware again, reboot and post a new log.

Thanks again, seems better. It had started again with some random pop-ups on their own when IE wasn't even open. But that may be gone since your last instructions. I did all you recommended, things seem so much better :tazz: , and it just seems like two things are not deleteable through hijack this:

If this is finally finished, what is the best program to use to keep them from not downloading again? (On my computer at this time, since all of this began, is spyware search and destroy, spyware blaster, norton 2005, ad-aware se, and am using mozilla). How safe is it to buy things on the web? Feeling a little uneasy about things!

See if you have isearch in your add/remove programs list. If you do, uninstall it.

Run Hijack This again and check these off.
