I run Norton Internet Security but it seems to have let me down.
I clicked on a link in google the other day and before I knew it, all sorts of horrible things happened.
1) SpySheriff attacked my system: my lovely Tulip desktop wallpaper disappeared and was replaced by a blue background with a black box with the words in it in big red letters "SPYWARE INFECTION" . In addition, a nag screen kept popping up with a Security Warning, promting me to " get the full version of spy sheriff now". And periodcally the Spy Sheriff program would start running, appearing to do a system scan, with my option of pausing scan, performing a scan or buying the full version now ( or such like). Two new symbols appeared in the system tray at the bottom, a bright red "hot cross bun" and a speckled red bio-hazard type symbol. One of them kept producing a warning bubble every few minutes. Also, my browser homepage was set to C:\Secure32.html and displayed a security warning message on a blue background
2) AOL Spyware Protection picked up Trojan.Win32.StartPage.afs , SmartFinder ( both classified as security risks) , CWS.LoadAdv.400, CWS, SpySheriff , AdClicker 1.0 , and later Trojan.Desktophijack, and blocked them.
3) Norton also detected Spysheriff but for some reason it excluded SpySheriff files from the manual virus scan, and 21 Spysheriff files appeared in Nortons "Exclusion List" (of files to be included in manual virus scanning). As soon as i spotted this, i removed them from the exclusion list. Runnng a full Norton system scan with updated virus definitions both from normal and safe mode later detected Tojan.Desktophijack virus and deleted it automatically.
AOL Spyware protection seemed to prevent the most annoying elements of SpySheriff from operating, but the blue desktop background remained and i was unable to change it in Display properties ( all selections were greyed out). I was able to reset my home search page to google.
NEXT, I have followed the steps recommended in "Start Here";
1) Installed and Ran CleanUp!
2) Installed and Ran Ad-Aware SE
3) Installed and ran CWShredder
4) Installed and ran Spybot S & D
5) Installed and ran Ewido
6) Trend Housecall online virus scan - FAILED to to this step - it appeared to not connect me
7) Installed and ran Trojan Hunter
It appears that these scan have removed most of the nasties
Problems remaining:
1) On boot up, a dos window flashes on my desktop for a split second, then...
2) the C:\Windows\system32 folder opens automatically
3) I can now select my own desktop wallpaper, but alas, the Tulip Wallpaper appears to be lost forever.
4) overall perfomrance does not seem as smooth, minor issues with shades appearing behind menu selection buttons.
Please find below my Ewido and Hijack This logs. Please not that the original location of paytime.exe was C:\Windows\system32 . I moved it because I was suspicious of it.

Also I am thinking about doing a system restore to a point before the problems occured, now that I think the malware has been removed. This is because I fear that my system is now slightly damaged. What is your advice about doing a system resore using the Windows XP sytem restore utility. Should I do it???
