Recently I've been getting a lot of unwanted popups and dodgy error messages telling me I have spyware and offering dubious solutions. Also, my IE homepage has been redirected to http://www.updatesystempage.com/ and won't change back. I think this is at least in some way related to an executable called mssearchnet.exe, which has resisted all attempts to be deleted and reloads itself if I end it in Task Manager. McAfee doesn't even recognise it is a threat, even when pointed right at the file in question, and it isn't listed in their virus database, but it is in Symantec's db under trojan.zlob.d.

Hope you can help,
Cloudwalker

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

The steps above have fixed my homepage and removed most of the unwanted popups. However, one persists- it's a taskbar icon that alternates between a flashing cross and the windows icon, and displays a constant "Click to protect from malware threats" popup.

Here are the requested logs:

I am not sure which infection is causing it. I am asking for a startup list as part of these instructions.

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {27150f81-0877-42e9-af13-55e5a3439a26} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpE25F.tmp (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpywareStrike] C:\Program Files\SpywareStrike\SpywareStrike.exe /h

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. This should be the 3rd item). Uninstall or remove the following items -

Spyware Striker

Reboot the PC.

Run Hijack This. Click on config ---> Misc Tools. Check the two boxes next to "Generate Startup List" and then click on "Generate Startup List".

Please post the Startup list along with a fresh Hijack This log.

Also let me know if the taskbar icon still persists.

You may have already downloaded some of the tools / programs. In case you still retain them, then you need not download /install them again.

* Click here to download smitRem.exe.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • It is a self extracting file.
  • Doubleclick the smitRem.exe and it will extract the files to a smitRem folder on your desktop.
  • Do not do anything with it yet. You will run the RunThis.bat file later in safe mode.
  • If the link to SmitRem above is not working try this one.
* Click here to download fix.zip. Download it and save it to your desktop. Unzip it to extract the fix.reg file it contains and have it ready to run later in safe mode.

* Click Here and download Killbox and save it to your desktop.

* Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
  • Install ewido.
  • During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido
  • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
  • On the left side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start and let it update.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.
* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

* Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

* Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

* Open the C:\Program Files\SpywareStrike folder and doubleclick on the uninst.exe file to run the uninstallations. Let it complete then proceed with the rest of these instructions while still in safe mode.

* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

* Doubleclick on the fix.reg file to add it to the registry. Answer Yes to confirm the merge.

* Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Put a tick by Standard File Kill.
  • In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following line:

    c:\windows\system32\netwrap.dll

  • Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle .
  • It will ask for confimation to delete the file.
  • Click Yes.
  • Killbox may tell you that the file does not exist.
  • If that happens, just continue on with the rest of these instructions.
  • Next in Killbox go to Tools > Delete Temp Files
  • In the window that pops up, put a check by ALL the options there except these three:
    • XP Prefetch
    • Recent
    • History
  • Now click the Delete Selected Temp Files button.
  • Exit the Killbox.
* Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

* Next go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you should see an entry checked called something like "Security info" or similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK then Apply and OK.

* Restart back into Windows normally now.

* Go to Windows update and install all "High Priority Updates".

* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

Your Hijack This log looks just fine. Let us clean up your PC a little bit.

Delete the following programs and the associated folders, which you downloaded during the cleaning up process -

smitrem.exe
fix.zip
fix.reg
Killbox

Smitrem folder
!submit folder

We can disable Ewido from running at startup. Conflicts can arise between multiple anti-virus programs and can severely hamper the performance of the PC.

Click on Start ---> Run. Type Services.msc and hit enter. Locate the item - ewido security suite control. Right click on it and then click on properties. In the Startup Type choose the option Disable. Similarly disable the service - ewido security suite guard. Close the window.

You can use Ewido whenever you want to scan your PC by manually running it. Please make sure that you get the updates for Ewido before scanning with it each time.

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

This will not delete the programs from your PC. This will only disable the programs from running at Start up and result in a faster PC. You can always run the programs manually by using the respective exe files or the shortcuts.

Since your PC is currently clean, create a system restore point. A system restore would enable you to revert to the settings on the PC when the restore point was created. It is also a good idea to flush all earlier system restore points which may be containing infected files.

Click on Start ---> Help and Support.

Under Help and Support Resources, click on System Restore. Click on "create a restore point". Click on Next and follow the instructions to create the system restore point.

Now Click on start ---> Run. Type in - cleanmgr - and hit enter. In the window which opens, it will ask you to choose your default drive (most likely C:\). Click on OK. It will scan your hard disks for cleaning up and may take a couple of minutes. Be patient.

After the scan is complete, click on "More Options" tab. Click on cleanup button in the System Restore section. Click on Yes when you are prompted - Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?

Click on OK and exit Disk Cleanup.

Reboot the PC and post a fresh HJT log. Let me know how it goes and whether you have any issues with your PC now.
