Well, as long as I've had this laptop (just under a year) I couldn't burn DVD's, but I could read them. Then, just after New Year's, it stopped playing them. I'd see the first second of the menu/preview and then windows would pop up an error for the program I was using to view it! I used Interactual and windows media player, both had the same problem. My NTI CD and DVD Maker program says I don't even have DVD capabilities on this computer. Help!

Oh, ya, and I'm running out of XP, SP1. That's another problem, I'll go post that on the Windows area.

Hi and welcome go Geeks to Go. You could try this cd gone patch:
http://www.geekstogo...tion=show&id=15

Here is a another possible fix from M$: http://support.micro...b;EN-US;Q316529 drive not recordable. Be sure to follow their precautions as you mess with this registry fix.

Well, the computer always knows there's a DVD. But, I get those bloody error messages when I try to play them. That, and your first link didn't work.

Yea, I just checked the first link and see what you mean. It used to work. I will have to locate the new one since I suspect it changed. This is what the cd gone patch does, from a document at M$:
http://support.micro...om/?kbid=320553 upper and lower filters, drive not found

The second link in my firs post is for drive not recordable, also from M$. You may want to try these as a possible fix.
