my desktop icons and on my quick start menu the icons for Word, Excel, Power point, and Microst Picture it!7.0 are all white squares. When I click on the shortcuts, windows installer comes up and says "preparing to install" then it beeps and an error message that says [" an error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Please run setup and select "Repair..." to restore this application"] BUt then I click the ok button and the application opens and worls fine. Also, my system restore won't work( it's not checked off either) and my windows media player won't work. I think this has to do with windows installer or something

ok have you run detect and repair? go under support or help (once the application is launched). go to detect and repair. when it launches it will prompt you for some answeres... check "restore my shortcuts while repairing". that should resolve your issue with office.

I had WMP version 9, then after it stopped working I tried to upgrade to version 10, but it downloads and when I click on the finish button at the end an error pops up and says " an internal application error has occured". And I can't rollback to an earlier version of WMP.

Oh yeah, thanks for your help starjax!!! I almost forgot! And by the way, where in Help and Support is Detect and repair? I've searched the topics but still can't find it, even under tools.

Oh, found the detect and repair...used it and a message came up that said "The Windows Installer Service sould not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode or if the windows installer is not properly installed. contact your support personnel for assistance." This also just happened when I tried to download an aoutomatic update from JAVA

have you gone to windows update and gotten the newest version of windows installer?

I tried to download MICROSOFT windows installer 3.0 from their website and accepted the terms and agreements and then get an error that says "accessed denied" when i click on that then an error box with "MSI30-KB884016 installation did not complete. Select 'OK' to undo changes that have been made." pops up. I click ok.

I was downloading 3.0, but this version ran and installed without errors. Thanks... Now?....

Initially, go with opening Word, click help then detect and repair

It did what I reported in post #6...I copied the error again

1. Log on to your computer as an administrator.

2. Click Start, and then click Run.

3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.

4. At the command prompt, typemsiexec.exe /unregister, and then press ENTER.

5. Type msiexec /regserver, and then press ENTER.

6. Verify that the SYSTEM account has full control access permissions to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive in the Windows registry. In some cases, you may also have to add Administrator accounts. To do so:Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

e. Click SYSTEM in the Group or user names list, and then select the Full Control check box under Allow in the Permissions for SYSTEM box.

f. Click Apply, click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.

7. Restart the computer. If the problem is not resolved, repair Windows XP.

Possibly, you will need to boot the PC and keep tapping the delete key until the PC enters set up. Change the boot order to CD ROM Drive then hard drive, press F10 then press enter, type Y then press enter and as it reboots, look for press any key to load from CD, press enter
