I am having a problem where my keyboard displays the wrong keys. For example, the "K" key displays "2" and the "P" key displays "."


I have attempted to adjust the regional settings but they are all set properly. Also I tried to update/reinstall the keyboard and its drivers and that did not help either.

Please someone help soon, I am using a different computer to submit this or I wouldnt be able to type this out properly.

This is a laptop. The keyboard works fine, everybutton works. Some of the keys just output the wrong key.

Also I noticed the keyboard keys are Correct as far as I can tell pre-login when I type my password to login to windows the keys work fine. After logging in is when some of the keyboard keys start acting up.

See if this helps:
Go to the Control Panel
Click on "Regional and Language Services"
Click on the "Languages" tab
Click on "Details"
Click on "Key Settings"
Select "Switch Between Input Languages" and click "Change Key Sequence"
Make sure all the boxes are unchecked.
Do the same thing with "Switch to... (Keyboard type)"
Click "OK"
Click "OK"
Click "Apply"
Click "Ok"
Reboot

You should now be fine.

I am having the same problem with my Dell laptop. Many keys are displaying the wrong character - for example, U displays 4, L display 3, K displays 2, etc. I tried the instructions listed however the Key Settings button is disabled. How does this button become enabled?

PS. this has happened to the pc before but it has gone away with a reboot. Seems to have some relationship to when my son uses the laptop to play runescape. May be just a coincidence.

Are these games played – [Online/Internet] – Probably have – [ActiveX/COM problems] –

This is a Fine Line Malware Type problem – Can probably be fixed by a [Registry Repair Application] but I recommend posting in the Malware Forum – Be patient – They get 2-3 Posts per Minute -

If you can find out the Make and Model of the laptop there may be a guide to the keyboard functions somewhere !

Linkmaster is indicating that the – [NUM LOCK] & [KeyPad] are active –

I had the same problem and finally figured it out. It is a function key problem, but it's not Num Lk, it's the -> fn + sys rq button. This combo will turn on and off this stupid function.

I have a laptop running on XP and had the same problem. Thanks for the help. fn + Num Lock worked for me. Only took a few moments to figure out the problem while reading your posts. I think that these suggestions will work for my Dell laptop but I'm not sure I understand how to do it. If can someone please explain it that would be very helpful!

and also maybe these won't work for my problems.
what's going on is that the m key types "mn" and the b key types "vb" and vice versa the other keys work just fine.
the space key is working like enter, but then enter key will do space and enter.

Well, I finally realized the problem that my computer had. It was a Dell Inspiron 1501. I first thought that maybe it was my keyboard or its settings that were causing the problem (v,b,n,m, and other bottom row keys). I didn’t think that it was a virus or spyware, because they never showed up when I did the scans. But then suddenly when I did virus and spyware scans, a whole bunch were detected. I would always delete the ones it detected, but for some reason some kept coming back. So I decided to do a complete PC restore. And my keyboard works now! I honestly think that it was viruses and spywares that made my keyboard function wrong. Also, I guess my antivirus and antispyware didn’t detect them early enough (two months it detected nothing).

Virus and malware scans are only as good as the updates. Then again the updates may not have the signatures for that particular virus, malware.
Since you did a restore, you probably have that virus in 1 of your restore points. I suggest going to our malware forum to be checked out (link in signature).
be patient, they get quite busy.
