Hard Drive Backup File

I recently backed up my 80 gig hard drive by burning the info to DVD. Now, when I want to re-install it to the original re-formatted drive, the disks read a file with the ending .dat and Windows cannot open the file. What can I do or use to open this? Help is appreciated....
