I attempted to download some items for my Sims 2 game from a Russian Sims website and next thing I know I'm redirected to a page that says to view the site free I need to change settings in my Active X controls. Then, the A/V program, antispyware and firewall are going crazy with warnings even as I'm attempting to navigate from the page. I tell all of the protection programs to delete, stop, desist, etc. Next symptom: continual pop-ups, even without IE having been initialized, redirecting me to MonsterMarket.com every few minutes. I know this to be some kind of malware and run Spybot, Ad-Aware, Hijack This!, Ewido, Microsoft Anti-spyware, AVG A/V. Trojan Remover. Problems are found but not all permanently fixed on reboot. Webroot Spyware found some stuff, but I downloaded the trial version and it won't fix the problems until I subscribe. I'd like to do that when I can afford it. It found CoolWebSearch, Ezula and other stuff.
So, I turn to Task Manager to see what's going in Windows XP, SP2: an application (ngpw36.exe) which was causing my pop-ups could be seen in Task Manager under Applications but went undetected by any of the scanners. If I tried to "end" it, it came back a few seconds later. Typical malware symptom, I've learned. So, the only way I could get rid of it was to end several processes on the Processes tab. If I tried to end the process that seemed to run the application on the Applications tab (ngpw40.exe), it came right back. But, if I ended a couple of processes further down the list (sms-msn.exe and sms-msn40.exe), I was then able to end ngpw40.exe, and thus ngpw36.exe, and the pop-ups would stop. However, that was a temporary solution and lasted only until reboot. I used Hijack This to identify some offending BHOs and their corresponding DLLs, then had to reboot into Safe Mode to permanently remove the above application files and their corresponding Prefetch files.
So, no more pop-ups, but I'm having some residual problems that tell me there's still bad stuff in my computer and that messing with Hijack This may have caused problems. For starters, all kinds of IE problems, forcing me to use Netscape, which isn't altogether bad. IE sometimes won't launch, or it crashes, especially when directed to run Java. The other, MAJOR problem, is my computer no longer recognizes that I have sound (I have integrated audio). I ran DXDIAG and it basically doesn't know I have any kind of sound at all.
