When you type in a keyword into google or some other search engine, what decides which web page (assuming that they all have META tags) come up as your first or second results?

For example, and not that I would do this: When you type the keyword "Wal-Mart" into google, it is the official Wal-Mart site that comes up as your first result. What if I wanted to make my website so that when someone types in Wal-Mart my page is the first result?

Thank you for any help or advice you can offer. :tazz:

That totally depends on the search engine. Many of them do things a little differently.

Some of them are sponsored, so you have to pay to get ahead. Most others are based on the number of links that are pointing to your site. The more people link to your site, the higher up you are in the standings.

It has little to nothing to do with meta tags.
