My computer was hit by the SPYWARE INFECTION virus. I cleaned that up, computer is running fine, but I can't change my desktop background. When I right-click Properties on the desktop, then go to the Desktop tab, it won't allow me to do anything, but the other tabs work fine. My HijackThis log is below. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi edwards1982...

Download FixDesktop.zip, extract the file, right-click on the extracted file, select "Merge", and accept the change.

Reboot and see if you can change the desktop settings.

edwards1982...

Click Start then Run...type sfc /scannow (Note the space between sfc and /) and press "Enter". You will be asked for your installation cd, so have it handy. Wait for the scan to finish (this might take up to an hour). When it's finished, click Start then Run...type chkdsk /r (Again...note the space) and reboot when prompted (type Y and press Enter). This will run on boot-up so restart will take a while...be patient.

Well before I could do anything, the virus/spyware attack resurfaced. In the system tray, a red circle with a white 'X' appears, and an alert balloon comes up saying "Click here to remove spyware, etc." Of course nothing happens when you click there...but it is slowing down my system, causing a lot of frustration. Thanks for your help...

Obviously, the malware isn't going away with the procedures you have undertaken.

Let's let the malware experts deal with this one.

Please go to the Malware Forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the Start Here.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- post a hijackthis log in THAT forum. DO NOT REPLY TO OR BUMP YOUR OWN LOG. If it shows a reply it may be overlooked as one that is being worked on.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.
