my television to use as a monitor?

hi i just bought a laptop and it has svideo on it?can i use it for television?so all the media format i could open on my laptop will be viewed on the television?analog televison to be specific, my tv had video in so can i use, i have read that we could use it but i'm afraid to try, and i have heard that its not a quality picture as well is there any software or added hardware to make it more clarity?thanks.

what kind of laptop are you using and what is the make of your video card ati,nvidia etc
