Alright so my parents have decided not to leave the stone age and refuse to pay $40 a month for broadband. Sadly we have dialup internet... I have had this laptop for almost 2 years now, and 95% of the time I could connect at 49.2kb/s. That is until the last week or so. It has been connecting at random speeds, rarely higher than 44kb/s. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about this. I know the phone line itself is fine as I tested another line, so I'm thinking it may be the modem going out or maybe a network side problem. If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it (besides shelling out the money for broadband, as I am only home a few months out of the year).

If you connect through a University's network, have you checked to see if the Internet speed drops during peak hours -- this could be between 6pm-9pm when all the Uni kids are just browsing? Or, have you noticed any pattern?

You say it started about a week ago -- how long have you been on that network prior to that?

Alright well first of all, we've been on this connection for years now. I have never noticed a decrease in connection speed during peak hours, only busy signals.

Hmm that is incredibly interesting. What do you mean about the IP schema? I'm not entirely sure what you are asking about.

Right now, your IP is 10.10.104.61 -- do you know if it used to be different? Do you know if it was always 10.10.*.*?

Your first hop is going to your localhost, which is fine.. However, your second hop jumps off to another address, rather than connecting to the Universities Network.
