Alright so my parents have decided not to leave the stone age and refuse to pay $40 a month for broadband. Sadly we have dialup internet... I have had this laptop for almost 2 years now, and 95% of the time I could connect at 49.2kb/s. That is until the last week or so. It has been connecting at random speeds, rarely higher than 44kb/s. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about this. I know the phone line itself is fine as I tested another line, so I'm thinking it may be the modem going out or maybe a network side problem. If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it (besides shelling out the money for broadband, as I am only home a few months out of the year).

How much do you pay on Dial-up calls per month alone? What sort of deal are you on? When I had Dial-up, I found that the cost per month was almost the same as Cable; however the connection speed was far inferior. If you find out those details, you'll probably have a better chance of convincing your parents :tazz:

Anywho, back on topic -- the first thing I'd suggest for you to do would be to make sure that your computer is free of Malware, by utilizing the resources here.

We don't pay for dialup, my mom works for a university and we connect through them for free. Otherwise I could prolly get them convinced.

On the other part, I run a pretty tight ship on my comp, it should be malware free, I have those programs and run them on a regular basis. Any other ideas?

Ah, I see.

If you connect through a University's network, have you checked to see if the Internet speed drops during peak hours -- this could be between 6pm-9pm when all the Uni kids are just browsing? Or, have you noticed any pattern?

You say it started about a week ago -- how long have you been on that network prior to that?

Goto Start, Run, type CMD and press 'OK' - now type: PATHPING Google.com - please copy and paste the results by right-clicking on the Command Prompt window, selecting 'Select All', and then pressing Ctrl+C. Please post the results here.

Please download PingPlotter. Run it and perform a search to the following website: google.com -- Once it is finished, click on 'Edit', and then select 'Copy as Text'. Paste the results here.

Please goto Start, Run, type CMD and press 'OK' - now type: netstat -rn and press enter; please post the results here.

Alright well first of all, we've been on this connection for years now. I have never noticed a decrease in connection speed during peak hours, only busy signals.

You're losing all of your packets on your second hop...

Can you please download this third-party Trace router, and run it. Run a trace to Google.com again. Unfortuantely, there's no way to copy the contents of this, so please just take a Screen Shot, and post that.

Thanks,
Dan.

It doesn't want to upload the picture, or its taking forever one of the two, but its simple enough that I can type it out for you:

Hop | IP Address | Time | Host name | Result |
1 | 10.10.104.10 | 150 | 10.10.104.10 | Next |
2 | unknown | | | Failed |

Odd.. I'd highly recommend contacting the University to ensure that they haven't changed anything in their Network setup lately.

I'd like to know why your second hop is going to this address:

City: Marina del Rey
StateProv: CA

Do you by any chance know if your IP schema used to be different?

Hmm that is incredibly interesting. What do you mean about the IP schema? I'm not entirely sure what you are asking about.

Right now, your IP is 10.10.104.61 -- do you know if it used to be different? Do you know if it was always 10.10.*.*?

Your first hop is going to your localhost, which is fine.. However, your second hop jumps off to another address, rather than connecting to the Universities Network.

I'm going to think about this for a little while, I'll post back in a bit.

Please answer my above question, if you know...
Thanks,
Dan.

I don't know if it used to be any different. I'll do a little digging around here to see if I can find any references to old IP address.

Also definitely not anywhere near me, this laptop spends all of its time in Iowa and Minnesota.

I know you said you didn't think you were infected, but please download HijackThis. Run it and perform a scan -- save the log and then please post the log.

Thanks,
Dan.
