I am having a problem with windows media player on XP
where it hangs and consumes all the system resources.
This only happens if I select mpg or mpeg file format in
internet explorer, wmv files work ok. I have also noticed
that in the my computer left colum the file details no
longer show a thumb nail of the video for mpg and mpeg
but it shows for the wmv files. If I double click a local
mpg or mpeg file, windows media player starts and plays
the file ok. To try and
cure I ran norton anti virus, re-installed windows media
player 9, and finally I went through the registry and
deleted all references to real player. I have also tried
going into the tools menu and re-createding a file type
for mpg and mpeg, no success please help

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results. <_<

Your log looks pretty good, just a couple recommendations:

1) I don't like the looks of anything running from a temp directory:
(i.e. C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\~ef7194.tmp)

I recommend you empty your temp files:
Click on the Start button and choose All Programs. Then choose Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Cleanup.

The wizard will give you the option of cleaning up all your hard drive partitions, if you have more than one. It will show you how much space is being consumed by unneeded temporary Internet files, as well as other temporary files, downloaded program files, and offline Web pages. Just check the box in front of the item, click OK, and the wizard will clean up your disk. Get rid of at least the temporary Internet files and other temporary files.

2) We don't recommend Spykiller. Ad-aware and Spybot S&D are better free alternatives.

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use).

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.
