Hi,

Is there a way to detect what firewall programs are running on my computer? I am having trouble with every IM program known to man (except for AIM) getting a connection. My IE browser works fine and I have tried every fix I could find for the IM programs. It seems that a firewall could be the only thing preventing these from working.

I know that Windows Firewall and Symantec are installed on my computer however they both show that they are disabled when I am testing the IM programs. Could it be that there is another firewall running I don't know about blocking those applications? If so, how can I find out what it is and disable it?

Thanks in advance

Hi hitachi,
I'd suggest (depending on your OS) restarting your computer into Safe Mode with Networking, and then running the IM progam(s) to see if you're able to connect -- if you can, then it does mean that it's a firewall or some other form of software getting in the way.

Please download HijackThis. Run it and perform a scan -- choose to save the log and then copy/paste the information into your next reply. Also, you should generate an Uninstall list --
To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

One more update: I did start up in safe mode and Yahoo Messenger and Trillian work perfectly thatwasy, so something is definitely blocking them. So, how do I figure out what it is? Firewall? Something else?

The two firewalls I know are installed on the laptop (Windows Firewall and Symantec Client Firewall) both show that they are disabled.

This problem has been plaguing me for weeks.....any help you can provide will be deeply appreciated.

Thanks!

your log shows that at least the symantec firewall seems to be still active...turn the firewall on..and instead of trying to disable it to get the programs to work...add you chatting programs to the allowed list in the firewall
