When I shut down the computer at night, in the morning the computer won't go to the login page. It starts up but before it gets to the login page it goes black, then shuts down and restarts. It goes through this sequence about 3 times and then asks me to start in safe mode. After I start in safe mode I hit restart and it starts up normally. If I shut off the power for a couple of seconds, it will start up normally too.
I am running windows xp on a 1.5gigahertz machine. The harddrive still has over 15% free space.

I ran chkdsk /r twice and my problem seems to be fixed. I defrag my computer about every 2 weeks. Should I be running chkdsk then too or only when I have a problem?

I thought the problem was fixed but the next morning the same thing happened. I had to go to safe mode to start my machine. Later that same day after work I had to disconnect the power for couple of seconds to get it to boot..Once I get past the login screen it works normally. I can log off so my kids can have a turn on the computer. Its only after its been shutdown for a couple of hours.

the fact that it fixed it, but then seemed to have stopped fixing it, is making me a little nervous about the health of the harddrive.
