error when starting windows 98

my mate gets the following error message when he starts up his pc.

error in c:\windows\system\msvcrt.dll

i tried putting windows me cd in and tried to reformat the hard drive but it seems to by pass it.

it loads up his background and then nothing else with this error message keep appearing.

any ideas what wrong?

In either case, you will need to boot into BIOS and make sure the first boot device is set to the floppy (a:) drive..
