Hi there, after scanning all your posts for the last 8 weeks for information purposes as Im not the most experienced, I now have a problem that you guys could possibly help with.
I have a Sony VA10 when I boot up it says below:

'Smart failure predicted on hard disk 0:Toshiba MK6021GAS -(PM)
Immediately back-up your data and replace hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent. Press F1 to continue.'

I press F1, then try to open in safe mode, it freezes on file \windows\system32\config\system.

The laptop is second hand so I dont have any of the original disks.

Not sure what section this topic should be in?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers. Andy.

Hello Andy007 and welcome to G2G!

Oh dear, that's not good!

As the message says the hard drive is damaged and needs to be replaced.

You might be able to get a set of recovery disks from Sony but they'd be a charge.

Ok, so if I need to get a new Hard Drive what would you suggest for a Sony VA10, are all Hard drives compatable? and would I need a new operating system, if so which is best?

Any help appreciated.

What is the model number of the Vaio?

I can't really recommend an operating system without knowing the specs of the laptop. As I said earlier you may be able to get the recovery disks from Sony which will have the original operating system and drivers on it.

Your specs are here.
Looks like quite a nice laptop and it'll easily run XP.

Thanks for the reply's.

dsenette, In answer to your question regarding warranty, no I don't believe it is. I bought the laptop second hand and he has had it over a year.

Thanks
