Make AVI files work on a standard TV DVD player

I am wanting to know how to convert AVI files so i can play them on my DVD player and watch them on a normal television.

does anyone know what sotware is able to do this?

Some dvd players can play avi straight of a disk but it would have to be a new one and you would have to check the manual its usually only the expensive ones that can.
