windat files unable to open - HELP!

Hi, I am a first time user ofthis forum but desparately need some help :tazz:

I have windows xp and a broadband connection to this. I am regularly receiving e mails on web based e mail with word attachments. Some I can open but others, (the important ones) have converted to windat files and I cannot read them. It is driving me mad. What can I do if antything to be able to read them. I would need this explained in step by step detail.
