Hi, new here. And I am far from being a computer geek. Compared to my mother and husband I know a lot, compared to you guys I probably know nothing.

About one year ago, I was using a software program and inadvertantly started to eras W98!. Good work!!!! Got someone to fix that for me, but as time goes on my computer is really slow and getting slower. I would LOVE to reformat my harddrive and, basically, start all over again. Are these instructions what I would use to do that? I'm scared to try!

Thanks much.....
Lori :) :tazz:

:whistling: This is great step by step info. Thank you. A friend was fixing one of my computers that crashed and took it upon himself to delete Win98se and put something called Ubunto on it instead. He said it will be so much faster and better. Well it is way slower now and I have tried to figure out how to use it and I just would rather have windows back. What do I need to do to take delete it and add win98?

Ubunto is a version of Linux. You'll likely need to format the drive, and perform a clean installation of Windows 98.

Thank you for the answer. Now do I just do a format then that clears it. Then add the win98. I am sorry this is probably what you were saying but I am pretty new to this . I have formatted one other time but it was about 3 years ago. I don't remember how I did it. Can I just put the new disk in and do the format. Or will it reqiure me to have a blank drive first. Thank you for your time.

ON step 7 my screen is different it has two drives, D, and E. Not sure if that does anything but thought i would post
anyways, the big problem i have is that the format is terminating.
THis is what it says.

Formatting 19, 46.52M
TRying to recover allocation unit 14,981

Not ready
Format terminated.

What should i Do?

DHopper:

Thank you for the information. I will store it just in case !!!!

I had another crash yesterday. I have two (2) sets of Quick Restore CD's, I got one set shortly thereafter I purchased my PC in 2000 and the 2nd set several years later, I used the 2nd CD set, and it worked, everything finally load properly but not without a fight, it took me all day to finally get back up on my PC, unbelievable.

I had to do another Fdisk and did it right this time, just by reading different material on the matter, not always understanding what I was reading, in fact, most of the time what I was reading and/or doing, but had a much better view on it, I somehow pulled it off. But ....

During that whole process yesterday, my PC was still locking up, every time it did, my heart would just sink because I thought I would have to start the whole process all over again, so what I kept doing was hitting Ctrl Alt + delete twice, I had to do this many, many, many times until it stopped locking up on me and finally got thru QR. I know this may sound crazy, but I felt like I was literally in a fight with my PC, it would hit and I would hit right back, over and over and over again, I just don't know what the problem is. I have read all the material posted on this site you Technicians have told use about, the different AntiSpyware and AntiVirus programs to download (for my Operating System of course) and installed and ran them, and I still get this noise and lock up. It's a grinding or churning sound, can't explain it. There were several times after the QR was finished and was back on my desktop where I stepping away from my PC and I heard the noise/sound and it locked up again, I wasn't even near my PC doing anything on it and it locked up, I was pissed. I was so tempted to physically destroy everything in my CPU and just throw it all away, which is what I should do, I was that ticked. Hooper, do you think it could be my Hard drive and/or C drive, or both are going bad. Could it even be my CD Rom, because with that, I have to fight taking out and putting in a floppy disk, I just don't understand.

Thank U !!!

OK, never mind. Guess I should have read the section with the big headline about deleting partitions, eh?

Everything's going OK... for now. :whistling:

Hi I am trying to do a clean install of Win98 SE on a computer that was running XP Home, the harddrive is fresh but its 160GB and i have done fine right up to the last part where i have to type "A:\>D:\Win98\Format C:" when i say yes, it shows this

Formatting 51,70.95M
Invalid media or Track 0 bad - disk unusable.
Format terminated

i dont know what else to do, i have tried to reinstall XP Home bu when it gets to 14% in setup i says it cannot copy 'country.sys', then after that the list goes on, so i tried installing XP Pro and same thing, got to 14% but it was a different file and it couldnt finish, and i just get errors that say it 'setup cannot repair disk', when i did the scandisk off the win98 CD it got to File allocation and failed, and when i try to format the Harddisk it says

ERROR
Setup cannot install Windows 98 on your computer.

An error was detected while formatting your primary hard disk partition

Press ENTER now to quit Setup.

This is an Asus Ai Series P4P800 Motherboard
and v2.51 American Megatrendsm Inc BIOS

i need some serious help, is my hard drive finished?

you can email me at e-mail removed if you find out what i can do about this, or any tips
