don't blame you....

thanks for the clarification

Well, that makes things much easier. You could actually use system restore to store the disk image on the secondary drive, then restore back from the drive to the new 160

Or you could pull the secondary 160, insert the new, clone to that directly with either hdclone or ranish

You sound like you installed the second drive....do you know how everything is set up...ie, what drive is master, what is slave, how many cd-roms, which are masters and which are slaves?

now that sounds do-able but how
the old 20 g is the master
the old 160 g is the secondary
the new 160 g is going to be the master
looking for the simplest solution as i have never done this before
and this is my only pc

I was hoping for master and primary info, too

Oh well.

This is what I would do. It seems to me the easiest way would be to make an image using system rescue CD to the secondary harddrive....this will not overwrite the info, it will merely create a smaller than 20gb file on the drive.

I would then shut down, remove the 20gb drive, and install the new 160gb drive as a master, then boot up again with the system rescue cd, then RESTORE the diskimage from the secondary drive to the new drive

then, reboot and remove the system rescue cd.

Windows should load as always, but with the new drive. It will register as a 20gb drive

You will then resize the now primary drive from 20gb to 160 using QtParted

Does that make sense?

The image creation process will take about 15 minutes max, and the image restore will take about the same

Resizing the partition will take about the same amount. Should be done in about an hour

okay so this is what i do
create image of primary onto secondary -- WITH SYSTEM RESCUE CD, PARTIMAGE SAVE is the term, not create
replace primary with new drive
reboot with system recue and restore the image to the new hd-- CORRECT

( do i follow the new hd instructions first)? or what? -- no, you shouldn't have to... you are cloning the drive, which will recreate the partion and file structure.

sorry for all the questions
im starting to feel comfortable with doing this procedure
thanks for all the help

What version of nero are we talking about? Nero back up was never capable of a disk image clone on earlier versions

Well, shut my mouth, when did they add that? I'm looking through the manual for Nero Ultra version 7 and it does indeed create disk images! Way to go nero.

You can download the manual here

http://ww2.nero.com/...BackItUp_2.html

There is a walk-through in the manual that requires that you create a bootable backitup disk

The process is pretty much the same as with system resuce disk, but looks a lot friendlier as it can be started in windows.

Back up c: to an image file on D:

Replace old drive with new drive...no partition or formatting needed

Insert new bootable disk and run restore

You DO NOT WANT TO SKIP step 9, and you want to FIT TO TARGET in 10

I'm very sorry...this is a new feature that I was not aware was added to Nero....Looks like I may need to upgrade from version 5.5

I don't know. I cannot access a manual online. From teh faw and knowledge base, it does not APPEAR to work.

For one, the program needs a host operating system to run...you will not have that, it seems. I think we're better off working with the system rescue disk or one of the other alternatives

Let me see if I can describe this better...hold on
