Win Xp does not detect when im connected to internet

I was trying to find some updates and i get this error saying connection not active or connect to the internet and start downloading the updates. I get this error on ms antispyware update downloads and also when i try to send my error report to microsoft. Plz i also mentioned some problems about messengers not logging me in. Yahoo! always ask for settings up my connection. messenger creeps up that retry/cancel/help menu. Plz guys tell me what to do. If u want me to change my network settings i can do that.
