Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Also if you have any programs that may prevent system changes (like Spybot's TeaTimer program, Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, and others), make sure you disable them before doing any of the fixes (or accept the changes for the fix we give you when asked by the programs).

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido (only if you have Windows 2000 or XP). If you didn't, do them now. For more information, go to http://www.greyknigh...com/spyware.htm

Download LSPFix http://www.greyknigh.../spy/LSPFix.exe and run it. Check the box that says 'I know what I'm doing'. Click on newdotnet7_22.dll on the left window and then click on the arrow pointing to the right. Click Finish and follow the prompts.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingc...showtutorial=61 ). Make sure to close any open browsers.

Uninstall New.net, WinTools, GMT and Aquatica Water Worlds via the Add/Remove panel.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: URLLink - {4A2AACF3-ADF6-11D5-98A9-00E018981B9E} - C:\Program Files\NewDotNet\newdotnet7_22.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8DA5457F-A8AA-4CCF-A842-70E6FD274094} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsT.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AQ3HelperStartUp] C:\PROGRA~1\AQUATI~1\AQ3HEL~1.EXE /partner AQ3
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [New.net Startup] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL,ClientStartup -s
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Error Safe] "C:\Program Files\Error Safe Free\ers.exe" /scan
O4 - Global Startup: GStartup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT\GMT.exe
O16 - DPF: {205FF73B-CA67-11D5-99DD-444553540006} (CInstall Class) - http://www.errorguar...ion/Install.cab

Locate the following Files/Folders and delete them if they exist (if no location given, just do a search for them):

C:\Program Files\NewDotNet\
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\
C:\PROGRA~1\AQUATI~1\
C:\Program Files\Error Safe Free\
C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT\

Restart. Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

* Click on 'Scan your PC' button. There should be a popup - if you have a pop-up blocker, make sure it's not blocking it.
* Click 'Check Now' & a pop-up window will appear.
* Enter your Country, State and E-mail Address & click 'Scan Now' - begin downloading Panda's ActiveX controls (8 MB size).
* Begin the scan by selecting My Computer.
* If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Ignore any entry it finds (since it wants you to buy the program for removal) as we will address this later.
* Click on see report. Then click Save report.
* Please post that log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks, I will do all the above.

Also,

I am unable to Update Windows or install Windows Defender. I get the error

Validation Incomplete: Windows must be Activated

In spybot I got the error Windows security Center.AntiVirusDiableNotify

How can I correct this and enable Windows updated again?

Go to Start->Run and type in regsvr32 /u occache.dll and hit OK.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Right click and copy the below lines. Go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\HDPlugin1101.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.2\HDPlugin1101.dll
C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall7_22.exe
C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall6_98.exe
C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall7_14.exe

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close it and restart your computer manually.

Go to Start->Run and type in regsvr32 occache.dll and hit OK.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\security center]
"FirewallDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\security center]
"FirewallDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=dword:00000000

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Close Notepad. Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

Restart your computer. Try getting Windows Defender now. Run a new Panda scan and post that log here. Is anything else found? If not, then:

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

I'm still unable to downloads and Windows defender due to the Validation issue. The restore cds are ghost images. Am I able to run a repair with a Windows Professional CD? Thanks

If memory serves me right, I think the Microsoft site doesn't play too kindly with OEM and multi-license Windows CDs sometimes. Not sure if it's ok to post this information....so I will send you a PM about this instead. It will allow you to change the OEM version to a retail-like version. We'll see if that works. If not, post this in the Windows forum instead.

Any other spyware/malware related problems?
