Win ME in a gateway 933 Essential (flex case). Lately it's gotten reeeaaallllyy slow, to the point where it takes 15 seconds to open a blank word doc! Frequent lock-ups, really slow net browsing, etc...

Running AVG, no apparent malware thanks to Justin in the Malware forum. Unit came with 128k SDRAM, I added new 256K SDRAM to see if it would help, but no difference. I had a problem a while back with the motherboard flexing and messing with the 128k SDRAM, according to the tech guy I took it to. It seems a bit loose in the slot compared to the new 256k. Does it make any difference whisch slot I use? Should the bigger 256 go in DIMM 1?

I really don't want to buy a new machine. This one is used for schoolwork and research for the kids, occasional browsing...

I also found some stuff in other tech forums about capacitors going bad, I'm going to check that one out when I get home tonight. If that's it...am I destined for a new machine??? :tazz:

Hi kkpjm...

Try running with just the 256MB stick in the first slot.

Then run the following from System Tools (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools):
  • Scandisk...tick the box to "Fix errors automatically".
  • Disk Cleanup...To remove temp files and other clutter.
  • Disk Defragmenter...To organize the file structure on the HDD.
Any improvement?

Some improvement, but not a lot. I ran a HJT afterwards, here's the log...looks like there could be something else going on here. Perhpas I'll post in the malware forum as well :tazz: ....your thoughts?
