Cannot click active window or anything on desktop at times, pc fails t

just to update my computer is now crashing at random times with the screen freezing. when music was playing in media player it just cut off when the system crashed. this has happened 5 times today

OK you have an IRC bot but I do not think that is the whole problem - we will clear that first and see what happens

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft MSN Messenger] C:\RECYCLER\msnmnsgr.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

jus to add another thing, my pc displayed the message 'input signal out of range' and my monitor went black. sounded like the pc was still running but no way of seeing anything

PC still crashing at startup and taking many attempts to get it up and running

I feel that you are getting hardware failures as opposed to malware. I would suggest updating your Video drivers initially to see if that clears the problem and to then test your RAM. I am afraid this is a bit beyond my expertise. But there is no malware apparent now

'input signal out of range' suggest that the refresh rate on your monitor is wrong

how do i go about updating my drivers and testing my RAM?

What can i do about the refresh rate on my monitor then? how do i find out what it is and what it should be?

To check the refresh rate right click on your screen and select properties, full details here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311403

The properties tab will also give details of your video driver. You will need to go to the manufacturers website for the driver

I updated the drivers, changed my refresh rate on my monitor to the maximum my monitor would allow (75hz) and ran memtest overnight. it ran 6 full scans and reported no errors at all.

what do you advise i do next?

just to add, when i startup the pc, onthe desktop i get the following message:

If you have an ATI card then

Uninstall the Catalyst Control Center (not the drivers.). Reboot. Re-Install the CCC, reboot.

e.g., C:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-3_xp_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_43737\CCC\setup.exe

This should cure the problem.

Next we will try a system clean up

Prefetch is clickable for more information

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, (all files will highlight), right click any file, click delete, confirm

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up

Reboot

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run defragmenter

Download, install and run Tune Up 2007 Trial

Run Tune Up disc clean up

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Disable the anti virus programme then click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Check the anti virus programme is running

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Click optimize and improve then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor
