Managed to get it on long enough to run a fresh scan and get the log.I think its something on startup thats causing the crash because when a program encountered a problem and tried to restart, I canceled it and this is how its stayed on so long I think.Cant remember which program it was though I could be totally wrong about that problem.Heres the log:

Hi p.boyle -

If you need to perform these fixes in section because of the boot problems that's okay, keep me updated on your boot problems and we can work something out if you're still having problems.

Please disable the realtime protection provided by Spybot's TeaTimer as well as SpywareDoctor from now until you are clean. Both are good programs but they can interfere with our fixes. Go here for further instructions if you need them.

1. Remove Smitfraud

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

2. Random's System Information Tool
  • Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here.
  • It is important that is saved directly to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Leave the file age at the default of 1 month, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Note: It is likely that the 2 logs will be very long and may not fit into one reply. If that's the case, please split them up into multiple replies and ensure that you've posted the contents of the logs to the last line, which should read ---EOF---.

So in your next reply I need the log from SmitfraudFix and the 2 logs from RSIT :).

Hi p.boyle -

I see you're using p2p software such as BearShare and LimeWire. Although p2p programs are not usually malware in their own right, oftentimes malware is installed alongside them. Even if the program is clean, people can and quite often do upload infected files to be shared using these programs, and it is very easy to end up compromising your PC. It's your decision about whether or not you use p2p programs, you don't have to remove them to be deemed clean and we'll still give you help if you want to keep them. However, it is important that you are aware of the risks. If you want to continue using p2p programs that's fine with me, all I ask is that you not download anything from them until you're clean so we aren't taking steps backwards here. To remove p2p programs if you wish to do so, uninstall them from the Add/Remove Programs (it's Programs and Features in Vista) menu of your Control Panel.

In terms of Antispyware apps, you have Spyware Doctor, Windows Defender, and Spybot S&D. Windows Defender is generally subpar, and Spybot is a program that was once great but is now showing its age. If you like Spyware Doctor than stick with it, or if you just installed it to clean your problem and don't have any long term need for it AVG and a Firewall will protect you just fine. So bottom line, disable windows defender per the below instructions, and then uninstall one or both of Spyware Doctor and Spybot from Programs and Features in your Control Panel. My recommendation would be getting rid of both, but it's completely up to you:

  • Click on Start -> Control Panel
  • Double click on Security Center
  • Select Windows Defender from the left panel menu
  • Click on Tools -> Options
  • Under the Administrator Settings heading at the bottom, uncheck the box labeled Use Windows Defender
  • Click Save and okay any prompts.

Your logs are looking much better, just some remains to take care of now:

1. Fix HijackThis entries

Please re-open Hijackthis (Vista users please right click and select Run as Administrator) and scan. Place a check mark in the box next to each of the following entries if present. Do not worry if they aren't there:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3B7AAEB1-9F3D-4491-9C06-C7165CA8D058} - C:\Program Files\Applications\iebt.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: 512686 helper - {51B15F5A-E98B-4658-B9CB-9307B74773A7} - C:\Windows\system32\512686\512686.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than Hijackthis, including web broswers, so that HJT will have the best chance of being able to fix these problems, and click "Fix Checked" .

2. OTMoveIt3

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Processes
    explorer.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\drivers\awvm1q06.sys

    C:\Windows\system32\drivers\awvm1q06.sys

    :Commands
    [Purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Start Explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, navigate to the open C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder. Open the newest .log file present in notepad and post its contents in your next reply.

So please post back the log from OTMoveIt along with a fresh RSIT log (it should only give you the main log this time), your decision about p2p and anstispyware programs, and give me a general update on the PC - are you still getting the bootup errors?

Hi Dave.In general, the computer isnt shutting down as often as it was but it still does with the same error message. I was actually considering restoring the factory settings on the computer before I got infected...I purchased an external hard drive so I had planned on saving whatever files I needed to that then restoring the factory settings but I want to make sure I'm clean before moving any files.Do u think that could help with the bootup errors? I also might need advice on how to go about restoring the factory settings because Ive lost my windows disk..but I cant remember getting one at the start..and Ive also lost my microsoft office 2007 disk. Just thought I would fill you in on that.

Hi Paul -

Yes the factory settings restore is an option, I believe it's built into the Vista recovery settings menu, but let's hold off a bit before we do that. You should definitely go ahead with backing up your important files to the external hard drive, because the files you'll be backing up (documents and such) aren't the kind of files that will be infected). And that backing up is a good thing to do anyway and that way we'll be prepared if it comes down to a factory restore. For now let's run a final check to make sure you're clean of malware:

1. ATF Cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All

Okay no worries about the Kaspersky scan.. we're getting to the point here where we can be sure your problems aren't malware related anymore as barring something we haven't seen before, your PC is clean.

However, there is a little more we can try before you move on to the Vista OS forum to see if you can figure out that error:

First, be sure you can see hidden files:
  • Click on Start > Control Panel.
  • Doubleclick Folder Options and click on the View tab.
  • Under Hidden files and folders, select the circle next to Show hidden files and folders
  • Uncheck the boxes labeled Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
  • Click Apply and okay any prompts from User Accounts Control or otherwise.
Also make sure you have your Vista CD to hand. If you don't have it we can still give this a shot, but you may be asked for the CD. Hopefully showing hidden files will prevent that.

Go here and follow the instructions for running system file checker. It will scan your OS for corrupted system files and fix them if it finds any. Insert your Vista CD if you are asked for it and allow the scan to complete. Once it has finished, let me know if you're still getting the error.

Hi Dave.Glad the systems clean. I ran that scan and it said some files were fixed but some could not be fixed.
I'm still getting the problem with the shutdowns but they arent happening as often as they used to but they still are random and dont seem to be linked to anything inparticular that im doing.Whats the next step? Thanks for your help by the way.

Like I say the problems with the shutdowns you're experiencing aren't malware-related anymore since the computer is clean. The next step is to start a topic in the Vista Operating System forum here at geeks to go. The techs over there specialize in figuring out these kinds of errors, they'll be able to help you out more effectively than I can at this point. So click the link to that forum and start a new topic there, describe the issues you're been having with the shutdown prompt, post a link to this topic, and let them know that you've been given a clean bill of health in the malware forum. It's been a pleasure working with you, best of luck :).
