I guess the question in my mind now is...why did this all happen in the first place?
Status>> Well....when I check my Device Manager in System Properties...all the yellow !'s remain the same...is there a way of telling whether the install went through as it should have?
oK...I tried something different...I unzipped it into a file....and then ran the setup...rebooting now to see if that made a difference
ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE.

Firstly...! VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
Device Status
This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed.
(Code 10.)
Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.
Then below, to the left is a button that says Update Driver
When I click on that, this is the option I took:
(Recommended) Automatic Search for a better driver
(the other option being Specify the location of the driver (advanced)
so thennnn....it searches and says...
The best driver Windows found is already installed for this de vice. Click back to install a different driver or click "finish" to continue using this driver.
To the best of my recollection...my computer came with the standard two usb ports and we added 3 more for the scanner and the camera....

! LOGITECH-COMPATIBLE MOUSE PS/2
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the file (vmouse.VXD) that loads the drivers for the device (Code8)
To fix this problem, run Windows Setup again using your Windows CD-ROM.
