Ok. My laptop has a 3ghz P4, 512 mb ram, and an ATI Radeon 9000. The first two are good enough supposedly but the site says that only these cards are supported:

Oblivion is going to test the limits of graphics card when it comes out. You will need a top-notch computer system to run it and I really doubt any laptop but the extreme best one's out there will be able to run it at any decent frame rates. I just spent alot of money upgrading my current PC so I can play it. you can see my system specs in my profile.

To answer your question more directly, unfortunately your laptop will not be able to run Oblivion.

Ya as most of us know that game looks really awsome and thus requires a computer thats really awsome. However I would be interested to see what it could run on with all the graphics options turned down. Like half life 2 and CS:source could run on a very wide range of systems, like my old P4 with a geforce 2 . Anyway just my 2 cents.

what you need to remember tho is that they were suggesting cards you can buy, not those that came with your system. IE integrated. I've stressed alot about my own computer running oblivion, then I read that one of the key developers runs oblivon on his 128mb (not ddr) with a computer he bought in either 2003 or 4, I can't remember the exact quote. If you need to max it out then buy a better graphics card, with accompaning power supply, If not, Just relax.

The game might test the limits, if you let all the settings remain at their highest. My experience with most highend games is that they at least have the option to tone down the eye candy to make it playable with some of the lower end cards.

In anycase why not wait and see when the game comes out what its min requirement is?

How do you suppose a Geforce FX 5200 would run? I know it's compatable.. but it's possibly the lowest possible card that would work for Oblivion.

Not very well im afraid, increasingly with some games the cards are physically incapable(we saw alot of this in CoD2) its just not worth the time to make it playable on some systems as it requires some special modifications to the engine to allow it.

A game developer you also have to consider may be playing on the test bed engine that wont have any eye candy applies to it yet, the fine tuning and pretty stuff comes at the end of the process usually the intricisies of gameplay and technical details like physics and AI are worked on using early versions of game engines where even chracter skins are sometimes missing or borrowed from other games using the same engine sometimes in some cases its just stick figures.

It comes to a certain point where if you want to play the game A. the way it was meant to be played and B. something like playable you need a decent system.

I would get a faster video card for you pc. The pc looks sufficient to play it really just dont buy that video card the x1600pro may seem fast but in reality dont let the series fool you.. its a pretty slow card..

The fastest x1600pro I know of runs 12Gb/s memory bandwidth. The one you choose is going to be alittle slower but should be close to 12Gb/s but its no greater than that at all.

The video quality you would be able to run it slightly below medium im just guessing here. No eye candy on I wouldnt think. I would look for a video card that has more power as you will truly be satisfied if you find a faster video card.

Do you think I could get a card below $200 that would deliver? It's kinda hard for me to grab onto a great deal of money as I haven't even graduated high school yet <.<

It's VERY rough, and not guaranteed to be accurate. Also, keep in mind that the amount of video RAM on the board has NO real impact on performance in and of itself; it merely comes into play in determining how well the card will do on certain detail levels. As a general rule, the lower on the list the card comes, the more powerful it is; all cards in one lower list section ARE more powerful than those of the section above it, and generally, the card at the bottom of any given section will be the most powerful, and the least powerful at the top of the section. (this comparison was done fairly loosely after looking at enough benchmarks to make one's eyes hurt, and aren't perfect, obviously) Also, cards that support shader model 3.0 will be listed with underlines.

If your card is on the "rock bottom" list, please, for the love of Akatosh, upgrade it; those cards don't support shaders at all, and don't even run Morrowind at it's fullest!

For those who have cards in the "outdated" list, even if your card might still hold up, you'll still need to upgrade it. It may support pixel shaders, but not SM 2.0.

If your card is in the "low end" list, I can assure you Oblivion WILL run on your system; it's just a matter of what your going to wind up sacrificing, be it a part of quality, resolution, or performance.

If you find your card listed as "mid range," don't sweat it. Things will run FINE, and you'll get plenty enough eye candy to satisfy you. For those that need to upgrade, I'd recommend looking at some of these cards first. These ones will last for at least a short while.

If your card makes it to the lofty heights of the "high-end" list, rejoice! You have monstrous gaming power that will certainly eat up Oblivion quite greedily. Just remember to keep your drool bucket handy.

If your card is on the "rock bottom" list, please, for the love of Akatosh, upgrade it; those cards don't support shaders at all, and don't even run Morrowind at it's fullest!

For those who have cards in the "outdated" list, even if your card might still hold up, you'll still need to upgrade it. It may support pixel shaders, but not SM 2.0.

If your card is in the "low end" list, I can assure you Oblivion WILL run on your system; it's just a matter of what your going to wind up sacrificing, be it a part of quality, resolution, or performance.

If you find your card listed as "mid range," don't sweat it. Things will run FINE, and you'll get plenty enough eye candy to satisfy you. For those that need to upgrade, I'd recommend looking at some of these cards first. These ones will last for at least a short while.

If your card makes it to the lofty heights of the "high-end" list, rejoice! You have monstrous gaming power that will certainly eat up Oblivion quite greedily. Just remember to keep your drool bucket handy.

Lastly, if your card makes it into the "OMGWTFBBQ" list, careful there, steady! You were starting to hyperventilate. Please don't pass out on the forums. And make sure your drool-catching bib is still firmly tied on. You're going to need it when playing."

ya, I know a fast card for under $200 that you can play it on high settings no doubt. Need to find out if you have atleast a 350watt power supply...

the 6800gs is a really good card for the money.

ps that guy is wrong about the x1600pro it shouldnt be in high end list because it has less than 12Gb/s memory bandwidth lmao...

the 6800gs has 32Gb/s memory bandwidth and you will be very pleased.. high settings for shure..

I should probably mention that my monitor is a 19" Compaq Presario MV900.. Will that effect anything?

is it a crt monitor?? its fine if it is which all you really need to play are on 1024x768 resolution anyway..


open up your case and on the powersupply there will be a sticker on it saying how much wattage it has.

If that's what we're looking for, my power supply SUCKS.
I saw a few 350W-400W on newegg ranging from 14$-22$. I don't know how reliable a 14$ power supply is.. so.. any suggestions?
