Hi

I've been having some major problems with my pc for a couple of days it kept booting up 1 of my applications everytime I logged on & no matter how many times I closed it would just start up again. I tried a system restore which had no effect & I ran Ad-Aware many times but it kept saying that there were files it couldn't delete. I then stumbled accross your site since running the suggested virus checkers etc I have now stopped the problem of application opening all the time & have been able to remove a number of Trojans & worm infected files, but I'm still not confident that the system is clean as I keep finding more infected files??
I tried to download Spyware Guard which successfully completed but when I tried to install it I had the message "unable to replace file c:\windows\system32\msinet.ocx"???

I'd appreciate it if you could trake a look at my HijackThis log

Many thanks

Welcome to GTG.

Do you have administrator rights on this computer? If so, try installing SpywareGuard again after we do all the below fixes:

Print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download Brute Force Uninstaller http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip and unzip it to it’s own folder (c:\BFU).

Run the program and click the Web button located on the top right corner.

Copy and paste the below web address into the address bar of the Download script window:

http://metallica.gee...alcanshorty.bfu

Checkmark the following boxes:
Use settings specified in script for the above option.
Show log after script ends.
Execute the script by clicking the Execute button.

When it finishes running, click the Save button for a copy of the log. Post the log created by the script when you have completed the fix.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingc...showtutorial=61 ). Make sure to close any open browsers.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [outlook] C:\Program Files\outlook\outlook.exe /auto
O4 - Global Startup: Startup.exe - unless you know what this is for, fix it
O20 - Winlogon Notify: RunOnce - C:\WINDOWS\system32\guard.tmp (file missing)

Locate the following Files/Folders and delete them if they exist (if no location given, just do a search for them):

C:\Program Files\winupdates\
C:\Program Files\outlook\
Startup.exe - unless you know what this is for, delete it

Restart. Print out these instructions and close ALL windows before continuing.

Download Look2Me-Destroyer http://www.atribune..../click.php?id=7 and save the file to your desktop.
* Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
* Put a check next to 'Run this program as a task'.
* You will receive a message saying 'Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds'. Click OK.
* When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the 'Scan for L2M button'. Your desktop icons will disappear - this is normal.
* Once it's done scanning, click the 'Remove L2M button'.
* You will receive a 'Done Scanning message'. Click OK.
* When completed, you will receive this message: 'Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer'. Click OK.
* Your computer will then shutdown.
* Turn your computer back on.

*NOTE: If for some reason you get a mswinsck.ocx file missing, go to http://www.ascentive...me=MSWINSCK.OCX and get the file there instead. Then try running Look2Me Destroyer again.

Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt along with a new HijackThis log.

That has nothing to do with this fix...we got rid of the main problem that was there.

The problem installing SpywareGuard was probably due to a missing or corrupted file. Download this file and extract the two files to c:\windows\system32\. Then in that system32 folder, right click on MSINET.INF and choose Install. That should do it. Install SpywareGuard now.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"

Go to Start->Run and type in regsvr32 /u msinet.ocx and hit OK. It should say unregistered successfully. Then go to Start->Run and type in regsvr32 msinet.ocx and hit OK. It should say registered successfully. Then try installing SpywareGuard again.

I'm sorry about this I thought it was going to be straight forward query.

I just did that & got both messages successfully, but when I tried to install SpywareGuard I still got the original message again

See if you can rename that msinet.ocx file to something like msinet.ocx.OLD. If not, download Unlocker and install it. Right click on that msinet.ocx file and choose Unlocker. Choose to Rename it...then rename it. Copy those two files you got earlier from the .CAB file and right click on that MSINET.INF file and choose Install.

Can't do anything about the file sharing program as we don't support it nor do we recommend using any of those programs.
