Hello everyone-- about a month ago i had some malware accidentally downloaded on my computer. Ive gotten rid of most of it but there are still two pesky yellow exclamation points that are continuously on my taskbar and a constant 'spyware infection detected!' window that pops up. Furthermore my desktop background has been changed to a black background with a red box telling me that 'Your computer may be infected with malicious spyware...'
Id really like to get this off my computer and Ive read some other posts on SWI of some people who've had the same problem and got it removed. tried following their steps but wound up with it still on my computer.

I posted before but was redirected to the Malware forum and was told to post my HijackThis log so here it is below

Thanks, hope someone can help
Courtney

Hello hourfollowshour,

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hello hourfollowshour,

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Hello hourfollowshour,

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\wupdmgr.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\osaupd.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Once the compute reboots we need to run a virus scan:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post along with a fresh Hijackthis log.

Hello again,
upon rebooting my computer with Killbox, it froze during its start up session three times before I restarted it in safe mode, then restarted it again regularly. After that I ran the program again and restarted and everything was fine on the reboot (still spyware but no freezes). When I went to download the Kaspersky Online System Scan my computer won't take me past the accept button after the Kapersky Online Scanner button. Hello hourfollowshour,

Sounds like you had quite the experience. :whistling:

Lets try to use a different based anti-virus scanner.

TrendMicro™ HouseCall Java Scan
  • Please go HERE to run the Trend Micro™ HouseCall Scan.
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • Under Using Java-based HouseCall kernel click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet, click YES.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
Which issues are you still having?

Hello again! Glad to hear from you, I went ahead and used the TrendMicro HouseCall Java Scan and it found three trojans/viruses that are as follows: (however when i finished with the scan my browser froze and had to start back up)
TSPY_SMALL.BJL (which it successfully deleted)
SPYW_WEBHANGER.1 (successfully deleted as well)
TROJ_RENDS.A1 (which it had problems with)-- however they explained to me that I needed to go ahead and delete the registry keys (which I cant remember exactly the names but one was balloon.application and another in the Classes drive that was a pretty long name, began with a C)

After I did that I checked in my C drive for the files it said had been infected by the TROJ_RENDS.A1 and they had already all been successfully deleted. The only thing is the TrendMicro also told me to open up my Task manager and find osaupd.exe et wupdmgr.exe and end the processes, however every time I tried to do that it would delete them and then they would reappear seconds later. I tried to go into the windows folder of my C drive also to delete them but they said they were currently being used by another program and couldnt be deleted.
Regardless, as I was about to type that 'that did the trick' the two yellow exclamation points popped up in my taskbar and my desktop was once again changed to 'attention! spyware detected!'
I AM SO FRUSTRATED!! I know you are doing the best you can and i thank you SO much for you help, just dont leave me now: I feel like this thing is beyond conventional help or something, its like an evil little thing!!

Ill go ahead and post a fresh HijackThis log just in case, otherwise Im not sure how to proceed next.

Hello hourfollowshour,

We need to re-run Step #2 of Smitfraudfix

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
